I'm posting this as an extremely biased fan but if you've not heard Big Country's first album 'The Crossing', it's absolutely worth a punt. Genuinely think it's one of the best debut albums from an artist in the 1980's. All the tracks in order and 4 of the B-Sides for the albums singles are in this playlist. Incredible record.

This era of Genesis always gets a bad rap, but I love this album. The first 3 songs are really strong and Domino is probably my favourite ‘long’ song of theirs and is amazing live.

Sadly the follow up We Can’t Dance cannot follow this up. The first four songs on that album are brilliant but after that it falls off a cliff.

Automatic For the People is obviously a really tight, well produced album with no fat on it.. but a bit of a weird experience because I know the singles so well I need to get past that mentally and listen to all the songs as an album.

They are a bit more gentle than I thought they'd be.. was expecting them to rock a little harder than they do. Not sure why I had that expectation though.

Yeah I think about 6 songs were released as singles off Automatic alone so that's not a surprise. The album is almost by default a "Best of".

Not really related but your question has reminded me of a really good podcast I listened to a couple of years back. Adam Scott and Scott Aukerman covered all the REM albums and had interviews with some of the band. Probably more interesting if you're a fan of the band but the hosts are great so might be interesting to get a perspective going in blind too. It's called R U Talkin' R.E.M. Re: Me?

There are lots of things I have this forum and community to thank for, even those who were not particularly pleasant to me. @kendal mint cake was one of them. On @Vito's Elitist Music Thread (remember that? What were that all about, eh?), kendal posted about the Shanghai Restoration Project, a music act set up by Chinese-American producer David Liang, who was inspired by the Shanghai jazz bands of the 1930s (whose unique sound came from playing jazz with traditional Chinese instruments) to produce an absolutely incredible album of that sound fused with R&B, electronica, and hip-hop beats. It's the album that really jolted me out of my adolescent rock snobbery, but it's also become one of my favourite albums of all time, not just one of my favourites of those genres.

The cover art is incorrect, but the instrumental version of the album that that graphic is for is also a superb listen.
