"Mumford & Sons is shit" doesn't sound right, but "Mumford & Sons are shit" does.

Yank sports pundits do these with teams too. “Liverpool is losing a lot of home games lately” etc, and it sounds equally wrong.

Both sound fine to me.

There you go, Gerry. Best way I can put it...

Can you do one of these a day for me to listen to before bed?

Non-Welsh people producing Welsh names is bad enough sometimes but Americans are worse. An American saying “Carrr-dff” makes me teeth hurt.

I’ll take it over people going, “Oh, we’re losing a lot of games lately.”

That’s the difference between being a club and being a franchise. You can be a member of a club, so “We” is perfectly fine in those circumstances.

Whilst it might be correct on a technicality it's definitely not fine.

I don't see why not. I only ever see this complaint from non-sports fans who like to imagine the people saying it think they're somehow as good as the players, when it's absolutely not the case. I'm not talking full kit wankers, but if you're a member of a club, contribute to it financially and volunteer for it (which does happen a lot in the lower leagues), why aren't you part of it?
