For another Warrior match that I find bizarrely fascinating - Ultimate Warrior vs Goldust. Goldust got injured, and their attempt to write their way out of it involved an overlong comedy segment focused on Warrior. There's a long section of it where he pretends to be Goldust's friend, making faces at him behind his back. And there's a bit where Warrior encourages a 'faggot' chant. And the whole thing just goes on forever. It's awful. Just think what a Warrior comedy segment would be like, and it's worse. And because it's so cringe, it's absolutely hilarious in every way. This made PPV.

It's fucking shit, but I could happily watch it any time. In fact any Taker match from that era, even the Rumble match with Yokozuna. It's full on childhood nostalgia for me. That PPV had Leslie Nielsen on it and therefore is automatically one of the best of all-time.

They gave him next to nothing to work with though, he had some god awful material to try and play with. The best bit of that story is Undertaker playing on a slide down the park.

Utter car crash of a match but you can't stop watching it. Yeah, whole thing just seems bizarrely mental. Zeus is in there. Arn Anderson is in there. Ultimate, not Final, Solution is in there. Hogan & Savage are taking on EIGHT people and it would have been NINE if Brian Pillman hadn't said "FUCK THIS!" to it. Whole thing is mental.
RancidPunx Posted January 4, 2021 Posted January 4, 2021 I remember quite randomly picking up Starrcade 1999 on VHS here in Ireland only a few months after it was broadcast. I wouldn’t have seen many WCW tapes for sale so pounced on this one. The card generally isn’t great at all, some of the skits are worse again but damn it if I havn’t watched that thing about 20 times ...... I remember it being in my video player for about 6 months . I couldn’t recommend it to you but for some unknown (sentimental maybe ?)reason I really enjoy that show...
Paid Members air_raid Posted January 4, 2021 Paid Members Posted January 4, 2021 Ah, Starrcade 99. Featuring such fabulous booking as ; a Montreal retread, a commentator being allowed to score the pin in a match he wasn’t in, three instances of people being betrayed by their tag partners, valets or girlfriends, and a participant winning a match because he told the ref so. The blueprint for Russo “more is more” booking. Possibly nothing as offensively stupid as Cody Rhodes winning the tag team titles from himself, Tara losing the TNA Women’s title after a match she won because her key didn’t open the right box or Team 3D losing to AMW because the ref couldn’t see whose shoulders he was counting down. But pretty bad.

The highlight is when they brawl out to the ring for about 30 seconds, and then head right back to the cage as Beefer brings his frying pans. Then Luger turns on Flair @air_raid.

If Russo hadn’t gone to wcw in 99, would it have survived I wonder ? There were people at Turner who never wanted WCW in the first place. Ted Turner himself losing his decision making powers due to the Time Warner and AOL mergers was what spelt the death knell for WCW. Had the company not lost millions in 2000 I'm sure it would still have only delayed the inevitable.

No. At a corporate level the writing was long on the wall regardless of whatever anyone did in terms of the actual wrestling product.
Paid Members bAzTNM#1 Posted January 5, 2021 Paid Members Posted January 5, 2021 "The Tower of Doom" from one of those early NWA "Great American Bashes". Looked incredibly dangerous. It's on the WCW "War Games" Blu Ray for some reason. I seem to recall, was it Ronnie Garvin, might have been the ref actually?, at the top just holding on for sheer life at the top. Whole "Tower of Doom" is just shaking from side to side. Didn't look safe at all. Probably why it was never brought back.
Paid Members Jazzy G Posted January 5, 2021 Paid Members Posted January 5, 2021 I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the Thunderdome cage matches.
