Alot of the big fights are at the really light weights which are not as popular here, so often not shown anywhere at all in the west. They can get very good TV viewing figures in Japan though. It was a known as a good market for boxing even before the rise of Inoue. Hopefully his success shines more of a light on the scene there as a whole. I just had a mistaken idea of just how good they thought they were at it. I think what's kind of skewed my view has been general Japanese TV, like all the panel shows and interview shows (they tend to dominate Japanese programming); there's this kind of implied narrative the Japanese tend to put out about themselves, that they're very much Zen practitioners of sports: enthusiastic amateurs who, the more they try, the worse they do. Probably more down to how they tend to do in football, rugby. and tennis, but it's quite discrepant with reality, when I think about it. They usually get a pretty good haul at the Olympics, and they've won the World Cup in women's football (although it's probably unsurprising that a fiercely patriarchal society like Japan doesn't make as big a deal of it as they should). The bookies have it down as one sided (Dubois is 1/10 on), pretty much everything i've read favours Dubois by destruction, but there's just something about it that makes me feel we may see a big upset. It's probably down to the fact that i'm fascinated by the whole Don King style of promotion in 2022, and also that Bryan is so ridiculously confident. That probably means nothing, it's just sold me. Dubois' body language is all over the place at the face off, he goes from finding it amusing, to being angry, back to being amused. It's making me wonder how he's going to come out, because there's still question marks around Dubois' game. If he comes out guns slinging, doesn't get Bryan out of there who knows what will happen. Bryan has a decent jab, has been working with Larry Holmes and if he starts peppering a Dubois that's slowing down with it, it could get dicey. All that said, Dubois probably wrecks him in 2. The reaction on Twitter in live time was pretty funny, openly mocking the look of the production, but as someone who's watched zero budget pro wrestling shows I didn't think it was that bad, i've seen much worse but it was like being in a weird time warp. I guess some people are just used to the slick Sky/BT type look. The fight I thought was playing out like I thought it might. Dubois had a decent but frustrating opening few rounds. He was loading up but Bryan was crafty and smart with his defence, he had Dubois' right hand under control. Dubois finally got him in a round 4 with a clipping left hook as Bryan came in, cracking shot and big Trev. went down like a sack of shit. But, as I said on Twitter, his stance/feet are utterly atrocious; that front leg is one of the most offensive things i've seen in professional boxing. He uses his hands in a really odd, uncoordinated way too. I suspect he got by because against plodding lumps he could evade damage and throw haymakers or pawing jabs in return. But, seriously, absolutely shite. Delighted for Daniel though. Not because the title means a huge amount, but because it does set him up for big fights. He’s almost too nice and normal for a sleazy cutthroat game like Boxing but I’d love to see him bank some monster paydays over the next few years and get out of it in good nick. Erm, I agree to a point. I love Daniel - and due to my very fortunate previous job, I got to spend a lot of time with him - but I wouldn’t classify him as nice or normal. He’s mild mannered, and deeply responsive to older, father figures. But he comes with an edge - he’s disassociated from sympathy/empathy in a way you only get from very serious, elite fighters. Ahead of an interview round we had scheduled with the nationals, I sat in Daniels house and asked him about knocking Fujimoto out as I thought he’d killed him watching live. Daniel said “yeah, I really fucked him up didn’t I?” And, to be honest, laughed his head off for far too long 😂 His dad, for better or worst, decided early on that he, Caroline and Prince would be boxers and that’s come at the expense of any schooling, friends, TV, music, socialisation of any kind. It breeds a different kind of person. It’s a weird set-up and the kid has sacrificed more than any one boxer I can think of - without really choosing that life for himself. Love the insight @d-d-d-dAzthe whole lifestyle of Dubois and upbringing is what was brought into question after the Joyce loss. Its pretty fascinating, and i'm interested to see how Dubois deals with adversity once he's faced with some again.
