Also on the same website/service is the 1968 dub of Destroy All Monsters. The cracks in the budget of the original are showing with some very janky looking effects

Do you enjoy the Corridor Crew at all?

Is it better than Robocop?

No.

I can't say I've heard of them, but I had an investigate and may check them out.

Put The Matrix on tonight and god, that's still a fantastic movie. Obviously the effects look a bit ropier now than at the time but pretty much everyone is putting in a great performance to give each scene some weight, and everything about the presentation of Agent Smith is nailed to the point of making Hugo Weaving seem like prime-Teminator Arnie.

Suspect both my wife and housemate are slowly coming to the realisation that while I have a reputation for being some kind of arthouse-level film fanatic among our friendship group, really I just love action movies from before every bastard had a mask & cape.

Great film. Funnier than I remember it being. Simon Phoenix in his dungarees is a blast.

Our version had every mention of Taco Bell (which was a lot) dubbed over with Pizza Hut, including signs and vehicles and the end credits.

Is it better than Robocop? It’s much easier to watch for sure.

That’s really interesting as I put Demolition Man as the reason I got obsessed with one day going to Taco Bell whenever I first would visit America (I did) and now I can walk 15 minutes down the road to one (which I did today) in crappy Essex. That said, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell are owned by the same parent company so probably made sense for countries that didn’t know what Taco Bell was.

Found a site with loads of the old Toho Kaiju/Tokusatsu movies on it to download and watch, so I'm making my way through them. Watched Godzilla (1954) this evening. There are some great shits in it, when he's looking over the hill at them on Odo island. It's kind of sad when they use the oxygen destroyer on him at the end as well. He just wanted to be left in peace, and they end up doing that to him.

I'm on Godzilla Raids Again (1955) at the moment. It's very much a "this movie did really well, we need a sequel" situation because I think it was turned around in about 9 months. I don't know whether anybody would be interested in some kind of Godzilla watchathon thread like the James Bond one? Anguirus (my favourite kaiju) is the rival in this one.

Dream Scenario

Started off well. Took a dark turn that was quite intriguing. Went down an odd road. Didn't really explain anything. Ended.

A bit meh overall. Cage was great.

Yeah, felt at least half an hour too long. Didn't seem to know how to wrap itself up.

I absolutely loved Dream Scenario. It was, in some ways, everything I wanted from The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent - absolute weirdness.

I was fine with the ending as well - while I'd have enjoyed them to continue escalating, I liked where they went, even if there was a bit of a misfire. I also liked the ambiguity of some things, and how some other things didn't get dealt with on-screen. Also, it might be the best Nicolas Cage performance ever - he was fantastic in this.

I just think the whole 'let's not really explain what's going on' shtick has been done to death now. Having an interesting end entertaining answer is much more enjoyable imo.

It was a great idea, well executed in the first 2/3's of the film, went a bit Black Mirror and that was it. Like Sphinx said, it's like they didn't know how to end it. Such a shame, because Cage was really really good.

I meant more stuff like specific actions people take or don't tell others about. It didn't hit you over the head with 'this happened, then this happened' - it assumed you'd keep up with it.

Also, on the explanation stuff - I don't know that I agree. The point of the film was what was happening to that character and how he responded. That was the story. The wider story or the explanation behind it, not so much.

It's like, I don't think The Birds would be massively improved with an explanation. And I don't think anybody thinks Star Wars was improved by them explaining how The Force works.

I'm not saying explanations are bad, but it depends on the story. I think there's a difference between paying a story off (which they do here, with the ending and the focus on his relationships), and explaining a set-up. It wasn't a mystery story about why this was happening. It was a story about it happening and what that meant for the main character.

Yeah, I'd say the reason for why it was happening was irrelevant.
