Just back in from watching Barbie with the Mrs and kids. Little lad went in as Ken and came out as Sonic (don’t worry Bacon he was dressed as neither) Gosling was a great dickhead. Everyone is great like and It feels a bit GB News to say so about a film that does feminism crossed with Toy Story so well but Gosling really does make it. Also, not so much a kids film with kid jokes, which the kids loved obviously.

Tetris - strong recommendation with the just the right balance between "genuinely interesting real life story" and "tarted up to make a story worthy of a movie." Although your brain may explode at the Welshman playing the Dutch/Singaporean bloke with an American accent living in Japan, trying to win the rights to a Russian video game for export to American reps of a Japanese company while trying to outwit the English media mogul born in Czechoslovakia. But it has nice 8 bit graphic bumpers between scenes and a kooky soundtrack.

A suitably mixed bag as I hit 300 for the year. Variety is the spice of life after all. But if that variety includes such utter pieces of shit as Old, then maybe it's time to pack it in. 3/10 is generous. A film so bad I could swear he is taking the piss.

Full list for those that care.

Best first time watches? The Mautitanian, By The Grace Of God (both a bit heavy though), The Whale, Casablanca (just had never bothered before), Deep Blue Sea, How The West Was Won (absolutely not the type of film I'd usually watch but loved it), One Fine Morning (there isn't a more beautiful woman alive than Lea Seydoux), Turbulence was a load of stupid fun as Ray Liotta goes full honey roast ham, Amelie as lovely as I'd always heard, Dodgeball I had a blast with (Ben Stiller is so funny in it), O Brother, Where Art Thou? is top tier Cohens, The Day After Tomorrow (I dont watch ITV2 so I'd never seen it 😂) is a brilliant disaster movie, Return To Seoul affected me a lot, They Cloned Tyrone (which might be the best Netflix film yet) was a blast and Jamie Foxx is superb in it.

I also got to introduce my eldest to Lady Bird, The Devil Wears Prada and Eighth Grade which was great. I'm really enjoying picking films that I like that I feel she is now old enough to appreciate. We also watched Clueless for maybe the 100th time.

Finished the Cornetto Trilogy again which I always enjoy, and I liked Paul as well. The Men In Black Trilogy was mixed. The first one is still brilliant, the sequels hit and miss.

Pride is still a 10/10 film and might be the film I cry the most at.
Do The Right Thing is still my favourite film of all time and has a strong case for the best film ever made.
Spinal Tap still goes up to 11.

Booksmart and Superbad made an excellent double bill, both two of the best comedies of the last 20 years.
The Age Of Innocence is another Scorsese ticked off the list, and The Diary Of A Wimpy Kid films still make me and my 10yo laugh a lot. Rodrick indeed rules.

I remember enjoying The Faculty a lot so I'm pleased that's held up well, and the same goes for Human Traffic

The Bridget Jones films are always a pleasure, I forgot how much I liked Quadrophenia and it's still a brilliant capture of British yoof and what it's like to be young, confused and angry.

Pieces of shit? Well Old obviously, and The Out-Laws was bad. Men was good, until it feel off a cliff and disappeared up it's own arse. Literally. The 4/10 is purely for my wife Jessie Buckley.

Luckily not too many duffers in the last 100 or so.

Absolutely cannot see Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret not being my favourite film of the year, but we will see. Here's to another 300! We can do it!

I ask this question with no ill will and please take it as a genuine enquiry, but... how do you watch 300 films by July?  I love watching movies but if I watch 50 in a calendar year I'd be amazed.  And I'm a pretty lazy guy who works from home and doesn't keep his pedal to the metal all day, if you know what I mean,

None of your fucking business! 🤣

I mostly work from home, when the girls aren't here it's just me (and the cat), and I have clinical depression. Satisfied? :)

But in all seriousness, of an evening, I'd rather watch a film or two than watch TV, and I don't game, and I'm less and less interested in football, and crucially, I really enjoy watching films. It's probably my favourite thing to do, so that helps.

There are others on here who watch MUCH more than me.

It's not that hard to rack up that many films watched if its your main hobby, and if you don't go out much (and why would you, it's shite out there).

I always find it incredible that people can watch 8 seasons of Game Of Thrones in a month, or complete Zelda the week it comes out, but I'll think nothing of watching 50 films in a month. It just comes down to time management and prioritising your hobbies.

(I say this as someone who is currently single and has massively cut down on socialising/drinking, so obviously YMMV).

We watched This Boy’s Life. Not seen it in years. Doesn’t feel like this gets talked about enough considering the great turns all round. I think if De Niro’s character has a shred more of humanity Dwight could be one of his great roles. Obviously he’s based on a real person and I’ve seen my share of real life Dwight’s but he’s just such a pathetic loser.

It got me thinking, did Leonardo Di Caprio pick up where River Phoenix left off? You could easily imagine a younger Phoenix in this role. If he hadn’t have taken that lovely concoction of heroin and cocaine would he have had Leo’s career. He probably becomes a Cory but young Di Caprio doesn’t half remind me of him.

Might do Basketball Diaries tonight.

It's easy to forget just how good DiCaprio was in his early career. The two you've mentioned, then you've got What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, The Quick and the Dead and having it watched it again recently, Romeo + Juliet which he is brilliant in.

It's easy to just see the "film" in something that big and overlook the performances, but he is great in it.

He used Romeo+Juliet and Titanic to launch himself in to the stratosphere then pretty much fucked off love stories and has only really done actors choice kinds of films since. Helps that he became Scorsese’s boy pretty early but you can imagine the obscene money him and Winslet must have been getting offered to do rom coms after Titanic and when they do get back together it’s for Revolutionary Road. If Tom Cruise is the last great movie star in the classic sense then Di Caprio might be the last great actor. Now just get some more age appropriate partners you dirty bastard.
