Paid Members ColinBollocks Posted November 1, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted November 1, 2017 Fair enough. My point was, even if he was a little chubby or more shredded, it isn't the best indicator of his ability to fight. GSP was a bit of a freak athlete in his prime. Speed, strength and reflexes diminishing are what will hurt him.
Paid Members Carbomb Posted November 1, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted November 1, 2017 Also, didn't BJ Penn look to be in pretty decent shape aesthetically prior to his recent hammerings?
Paid Members ColinBollocks Posted November 1, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted November 1, 2017 "I'm in the best shape of my career" sort of nonsense, aye.
Paid Members Egg Shen Posted November 1, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted November 1, 2017 despite all the GSP doubts we have, another part of me thinks that GSP isnt the kind of fighter who would come back if he wasn't near what he once was. I never get the impression that he's a BJ Penn-esque fighter who is trying to recapture the glory days despite being past it, i dont get the impression that GSP would be lying to himself. jimufctna24
I don't think wrestling is the only way GSP can beat Bisping (like Meltzer inferred). GSP was a fine boxer in his pomp, and he's been working with Roach leading up to this bout. I don't think GSP will knock Bisping out or anything, but he could steal rounds behind his jab. Even in his last fight in 2013 - when he was considered to be past his best - he was still running rings around Hendricks when he could create enough separation from him. I'm currently 55/45 in favour of a GSP victory.
Paid Members ColinBollocks Posted November 1, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted November 1, 2017 It isn't, but GSP is at his very best when he takes his opponents to places they don't want to go. Bisping has said in the build that he's worked his arse off on takedown defence, because he's fully aware his best chance is keeping it standing. If GSP stands and bangs, Bisping will be delighted. Paid Members Carbomb Posted November 1, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted November 1, 2017 Thing is, though, is that there's no real place where Bisping is unhappy to go, is there? From what I understand he's got great defence in most areas, including submission and ground & pound, as well as takedown. That said, for me GSP's greatest weapon is his fight IQ; someone of his intelligence will have studied Bisping's game meticulously, and I daresay he's probably got one or two strategies up his sleeve. Paid Members ColinBollocks Posted November 1, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted November 1, 2017 If he's still the GSP, then aye, but I think it's going to be super competitive, is my point. Plus, Bisping, while decent on the ground, isn't as accomplished as prime GSP. It's the reason he's worked his arse off on his takedown defence, he knows his weakest part of his game is his ground game. Just good luck getting him down, though. Paid Members Egg Shen Posted November 1, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted November 1, 2017 Yeh Bisping has real good takedown defence, and despite GSP continuously outwrestling guys who on paper were better wrestlers than him it does make you wonder if he can do it against a natuarally bigger guy. Paid Members Carbomb Posted November 1, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted November 1, 2017 Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression it was generally easier for smaller guys to take down bigger ones, because of their lower centres of gravity, hence why so many smaller tank-like guys are wrestling specialists? Paid Members ColinBollocks Posted November 1, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted November 1, 2017 IDK, I think technique and strength are the bigger factors. Plus, there is a reason so many fighters/wrestlers cut so much weight leading into the fight, because being bigger/heavier gives you some advantage, I'd guess. Obviously, I'm all floppy tit and 16" pizza.

It would depend heavily on the standard of wrestler involved.
David
7 hours ago, ColinBollocks said: He does, but I gave up going on aesthetics when Rousey turned up in the best shape of her career, but had her worst performance. Abs and cardio/sharpness don't always sync. Yeah, but Rousey was a mental midget mate. GSP isn't. He'll show up as per usual with his striking and wrestling on point, it just depends of he's able to overcome facing a guy who was a 205lbs fighter in his past, while GSP should realistically be a 155lbs fighter. I have zero doubt that GSP will show up and still be GSP. If he were facing Hendricks, Woodley or Lawler I'd be confident of it being business as usual most likely. I think there's a decent chance that the fight will be contested standing - at least for most of its duration. I don't expect GSP to "stand and bang" so to speak. I think he'll try and out land Bisping, and rack up the rounds by being the busier fighter. He might just pull it off as well. Not only is GSP a clever fighter in his own right, but he will also have Roach in his corner, who will be prepared to give him guidance throughout. There's always the chance that Bisping can clip him though. 25 minutes is a long time. As dominant as GSP was at his best, he sometimes went through a dicey moment or had a tough round. That could be all Bisping needs to finish the job. Edit: Bisping had a run-in with Masvidal backstage at the open-workout - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwPFaJDTyVQ
Paid Members Egg Shen Posted November 2, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted November 2, 2017 to be honest, the only fight i'd really been thinking of for this weekend was GSP/Bisping, but i just re-looked at the full card and this really is one of the shows of the year, the lineup is ridiculous, Bisping/GSP is feeling like a bit of a weird curiosity on the top. What's everyone else looking forward too? Wonderboy/Masvidal is an amazing matchup. Very few fighters have outstruck Masvidal and im interested to see if Wonderboy can. Im expecting long moments of inactivity because both men like to counter but i should explode over the course of the fight. I'm hoping the Maia setback hasn't dented Masvidal's confidence because he was on fire before that. Gall/Brown! Duffy/Vick! The return of Cutelaba, Johnny Hendriks in deep. I'd even forgotten Dillashaw/Garbrandt was on the show. This card is legit.
