Paid Members bAzTNM#1 Posted December 25, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted December 25, 2017 Probably as high as they were going to get. You knew all this £30 million stuff in the summer was bullshit.
NoUseforaUsername
When I think of famous Italian footballers from the glory days, pre-oil baron money, I can list lots of goalkeepers (Peruzzi, Pagliuca, Toldo, Buffon), defenders (Baresi, Maldini, Nesta, Costacurta) and attacking players (Del Piero, Totti, Vieri, Inzaghi, R. Baggio) but it's a lot harder to come up with midfield names. Until Pirlo, De Rossi and Gattuso come along - my brother always maintained the latter two were overrated - who would've been the archetypal midfielders between say 94 and 04? Albertini, Di Biagio... Donadoni? D. Baggio? I could list off 30 strikers or attacking players off the top of my head but barely any central midfielders in the Scholes, Keane, Davids mould. And isn't it funny, how again, virtually all the Italian exports to the PL were strikers - Zola, Di Canio, Ravanelli, Casiraghi, Carbone, Silenzi. Think it'd be the excess defensive players they had being exported seeing as it's the country that preached Catenaccio.

Sorry I should've made it clear that I was referring to 90's and early 00's when I was growing up. Forgot about Conte.
Paid Members bAzTNM#1 Posted December 25, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted December 25, 2017 Gianluigi Lentini was decent until he had his car accident. Don't know if I'd count him as an out and out central midfielder though. Went for the World Record fee one time.
The Curious Orange
Di Matteo, Eranio and Lombardo are the only other ones that come to mind straight away from the 90s. Possibly there's not too many as the Italian clubs in the 90s had a load of awesome foreign midfielder's as Series was the big league at the time. Paid Members bAzTNM#1 Posted December 25, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted December 25, 2017 (Lombardo) People always took the piss out of looking about 45 when he was 25 with his balding head, but he was actually some player during the Sampdoria Gullit, Platt days. Guy Bifkin
That's how far into the gutter Scottish football has fallen when a renowned non footballing province like Brighton are snapping up the best player to ever play up there.
