Paid Members Gus Mears Posted May 23, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted May 23, 2017 (edited) Spoiler Having slept on it, probably like it a little more than I did last night. Enjoyed episode three a lot more than the opening two which helped and in particular the opening sequence in the room with the women with no eyes. Probably could have done with 5 minutes less of Cooper shuffling around a casino like he'd just cacked his trousers. The paucity of Badalamenti score really hurts everything in my opinion and is probably the defining reason why it doesn't feel like Peaks for me. Spoiler There was a little more humour and it felt more towards the original series in episode 3 but I'm still not convinced. At the minute there's two things bothering me about it; the scenes seem to intentionally linger. Like Gus said some of them seem overly long and is Lynch being Lynch. The other problem is similar. Without the constraints of network TV He's going full Lynch and the tone is more akin to FWWM, Thats not a good thing. The original series was suggestive, the film felt seedy. That's not to say I'm not liking it, just that its not feeling like the original TV series so far. I'm loving the Garth Merengi level special effects as well. Spoiler 'Suggestive rather than seedy'. Yeah, that's a very good way of putting what one of my major gripes is so far. The original series had very little that was heavy on violence (times have changed in fairness), but it was scary through superb directing and interesting effects (see scenes with Laura/Bob in the train carriage, final episode etc.). The bit in the new episode 1 where those two dullards are bonking and the black figure turns up in the box, I'm thinking it's on the same lines. Then they get massacred bloodily and we get footage of their decapitated corpses next episode and I'm thinking 'right, OK then, so we're not going for visual suggestion anymore'. Evil Cooper then proceeds to kill a bunch of people graphically who we've built up absolutely no relationship with whatsoever. I guess the point is to show 'WOW, he's well evil', but I felt like rolling my eyes. It's not just a knock on the first couple of episodes, I think quite a few of the most popular series from recent years have a tendency to blow their wads all the time with stuff like this. If I recall correctly, Lynch had about 4 hours of footage for Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive ( may have been FWWM) and both were eventually hammered down to a couple of hours. Feel like this could use a bit of that judicious pruning too, which it isn't going to get due to the lack of network involvement as chokeout said. That said, I am intrigued and don't hate it. I just almost don't see the point of it being called 'Twin Peaks' from the (admittedly small) number of episodes I have watched. It feels like another good modern series and while that's OK, I was hoping it would retain a bit more of the original series feel and ethos. Herne's Son
Watched the first 4 episodes, not sure how I feel about it all. I've rewatched the first two seasons and FWWM the last few weeks, also read The Secret History book that came out recently, more thoughts below Spoiler This is definetly pure Lynch being unleashed. Seems much more in tone to Inland Empire and Muholland Drive then the original show. It also feels like a different show at times with random cameos from the old cast. The Black Lodge was always creepy and doesn't need CGI to make it more so, the CGI is quite jarring actually. The little red man becoming an electric tree with a brain is a...strange choice I guess. It's also unlikely this will draw in any new fans, too much insanity in the first episode which casual viewers will be left completely baffled by. For some reason I really loved the apperance of Jame at the end of episode 2 and Shellys line about his accident and him "always being cool" was quite heartbreaking. As was the scene when Bobby started crying at seeing Lauras picture. So many different plot threads make it difficult to know how it will all tie together, will be a good ride finding out but I wish they would pick up the pace a bit. Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted May 23, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted May 23, 2017 I'm a huge fan of it's initial run and I even enjoyed the movie and was ridiculously excited and excitable for this, but I'm with Gooch there. This is shit.

I kind of had the same feelings watching it; I found that it got better as the four episodes went on. I think high expectations, anticipation and wanting it to be great from the off has got the best of us all though. I watched the original two series and FWWM over the past couple of weeks and for the most part really enjoyed what I was watching, but they are far from perfect and even a bit of a mess at times. Unsurprisingly the new series is the same. I can see where people are coming from with what they are saying about the new series though. Even with its flaws though I (think I) liked the new series. Full of WTF moments, great to see some of the old characters back (and a few new ones) and still lots of mystery about what is going on (which hopefully will be explained throughout the rest of the series). This was us watching the new series of Twin Peaks over the last couple of days (was true then and is still true now): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjDa-_Vq51I Edited May 23, 2017 by DJM
Paid Members PunkStep Posted May 23, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted May 23, 2017 Just watched the first two episodes and I get the feeling I really should've finished watching series 2 first. I'm trying to digest it all, and I'm confused to fuck. On the plus side, I was grinning from ear to ear at the Ben & Jerry scene. I bloody loved their scenes in the original series and love David Patrick Kelly in general. Oh, and loved the Chromatics performing at the end. Was that Shelly Johnson sitting at the table at the end? She's aged tremendously. Looks even hotter.
Paid Members Bettencourt Posted May 23, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted May 23, 2017 You haven't finished series 2? Not even seen the final few episodes? :O
Guy Bifkin
The fourth one is definitely a bit more like it. The brief Michael Cera cameo is the best thing in it so far.
Paid Members chokeout Posted May 24, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted May 24, 2017 Came in to say the exact same thing. The Cooper stuff is still the weakest part of the show but the return of the humour and that cameo were fantastic.

scotswizard
What I love about this is it's really for die hard Twin Peaks fans, it's die hard Twin Peaks, Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire, Lost Highway all rolled into one. I highly doubt anyone that hasn't watched the TV series and movie would understand the show. The book Mark Frost wrote also has a lot to do with it, that's where the glass box came from for example and it's full of stuff like the Roswell conspiracy and tons of other stuff. I've no doubt this is David Lynch and Mark Frost just going out with a bang and I hope more stuff from the book makes it into the show, the book already told us what happened to many of the characters but if they add in all the conspiracy stuff it will be great, illuminati, aliens, monsters, other dimensions, everything! lol
