The Gaming thread - anything but video games

Star Realms is a perennial favourite filler game amongst my group of board gaming mates. Though I doubt we will play it with more than five people again, theone six player game we played seemed to drag.

The base Star Realms game is free to play as an app if you want to try it out.

It's so cheap as a card game I've ordered it off the strength of the comments in this thread and a little bit of reading about it. Looking forward to trying it out. Reviews compare it favorably to Dominion, which I really enjoy.

In a similar aesthetic, has anyone here played Race for the Galaxy? It's a lot of fun, definitely recommended.

I love Race for the Galaxy. Not played it for a good while, but enjoyed the last session with it. Nearly always follow it up with a crack at the surprisingly good Firefly game, and Cosmic Encounter, which is always a winner for me, especially with the expansions.

Interested in Terraforming Mars.  It's very popular on the solo gaming group, and im playing solo most of the time a the moment due to having no social time.  Still love pandemic like hell.

It was quite difficult to go back to vanilla Pandemic after months of Legacy. But bless it the game played itself out in the most perfect way: after much debate we'd figured out with 4 turns to go (player card deck dwindling) we couldn't cure the fourth disease. We decided to play through. Wouldn't you know it the perfect card turns up allowing us to cure it on the penultimate turn! Nail-biting.

Those articles are great, Lister.

It's funny, I thought I'd had a bright idea when reading this thread to pitch a feature article based on the enduring popularity of board games in the technological age, only to find the Guardian had published about a 9,000 word feature on them last year ?

Been playing a bunch of games of Star Realms over the last couple days. A few points:

1) thanks for the recommendation; it's  tremendous fun.

2) The Cutter is ridiculously overpowered. The Federation lifegain archetype seems very powerful.

3) we're using a life counter app on my phone that I have for playing Magic the Gathering to keep track of authority points and it's a lot better than fucking around with the cards for that. Strongly recommended if you're playing on a flight, Spurs.

Oh fucking counting down from 50 using cards is ridiculous. I grumbled a lot about that when I first played. I use the Carcassonne score counter (pen and paper would work fine). Cutter is great VFM, but Blobs are unstoppable en masse.

Playing some Star Realms tonight actually. Using the Colony Wars expansion.

I've had it about a month now. I've opened it and had begun to deal a game when I was in Mexico but then my partner said she was tired and haven't tried to play since :(
