Browser Brady Posted March 2, 2025 Posted March 2, 2025 Anybody got any fun games you play on long car journeys to pass the time ? Quote
Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted March 2, 2025 Moderators Posted March 2, 2025 Mallet's Mallet is still as popular with my kids as it was when we were young. Bonus points for taking out the headrest and using it as a mallet. Quote

When you see a yellow car say "yellow car" In all seriousness you can in advance make a list of 10 things to spot on the way. A yellow car A dog with it's nose stuck out of the car window. A pub with an animal in the name etc, etc. Quote
cobra_gordo Posted March 4, 2025 Posted March 4, 2025 We've always played the alphabet game with ours. Pick a category and you go through the alphabet naming something each from that category all the way from a to z. So for cars you'd name a car beginning with A until everybody has named one, then move on to B and so on. We do it with cars, animals, countries, a few things. Just keeps everybody occupied for a bit and I appreciate having something to concentrate on on long drives. Quote

There's also the numbers game - picking a category, someone has to name things/people in that category, in increasing numbers. So, for example, you might ask them to name: 1 type of rock 2 famous inventors 3 planets of the solar system 4 Royal Rumblus winners etc. Quote
Paid Members JLM Posted March 4, 2025 Paid Members Posted March 4, 2025 (edited) “No more women” also known as “No more jockeys” is a solid car game. Name a famous person or character. This can be incredibly broad. Living, dead, cartoon characters etc. Absolutely anyone. You then name a category that person or character falls into, and that category is then banned from the game. The categories can be whatever you like, but you MUST be able to name at least one other person who falls into that category if challenged for being too specific. So you could say, “David Beckham, no more footballers”. Next person “Sylvester Stallone, no more actors” But if you wanted to me more tricky about it you could say “Sylvester Stallone, no more people whose first and second names start with the same letter” Keep going until someone accidentally hits a banned category or cannot name anyone. It starts off feeling incredibly easy, then someone goes “No Martial Arts movie stars” and your brain will go Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee..” and you will forget the name of every other human living or dead outside of that small category. Paid Members Jazzy G Posted March 14, 2025 Paid Members Posted March 14, 2025 I've been really enjoying my D&D on a Thursday night. I'm getting a better handle on the rules. We've done some combat. Picking an Orc worked to my advantage last night as we were being tested by Gotrex and my relentless endurance combined with using Mirror Image (College of Glamour Bard) meant I managed to last longer than the rest of the party. Anyway, I'll stop boring on about it. Quote

Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted March 14, 2025 Moderators Posted March 14, 2025 (edited) Seconded. Most popular game in our house atm is Sushi Go Party. Loads of fun, pretty simple and quick. As a former MTG player I love that is a game with drafting as its core mechanic. My only complaint is that the box is shit at holding all the contents in place. Also I think I might sleeve up all the cards and then they're not going to fit at all probably. I've been staring at and watching videos about this kickstarter for weeks now and finally bit the bullet on backing it 4 days before it ends - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/highoctanehanz/fight-deck-select-your-fighter?ref=checkout_rewards_page A card game based on fighting video games. They really seem to have tried to capture the feel of the games with the interaction between overheads, jumping, crouching and standing, and how rather than play just going back and forth like a normal card game they have neutral, knock down and wake up that seems more fluid and based on the outcome of the cards. Really nice idea that I don't think I've seen anywhere else. Edited March 14, 2025 by Chest Rockwell Quote

Anyway, I'll stop boring on about it. Keep on matey! I play online on a Friday. Currently I'm playing a zombie monk who is obsessed with death as a concept, and who raises money by pole dancing using a spear. I have made some odd characters... a skeleton bard who played his ribs as a xylophone was one that I couldn't make work. But the best was a fae barbarian who used a two handed, full size battle axe. Paid Members Jazzy G Posted March 14, 2025 Paid Members Posted March 14, 2025 My character is an Orc Bard called Weerdal who plays the accordion. I'm trying to work out his back story but it's along the lines of having been cast out by Orcish society for not being sufficiently warlike. Making his way through the land, accordion in hand to make a living. At some point I'll get to Geek Retreat super early and try to work on it some more. I bought a £10 toy/beginner's accordion on Vinted that I intend on sussing some basics out on that I can bring with me to sessions and start busting out tunes. My strategy in combat has been to hide behind somebody and use a combination of dissonant whispers and vicious mockery to deal damage from distance. At the moment I'm some kind of Neutral alignment, but as I get into the campaign more I'm sure I'll figure it out. The party I'm playing with is a good group of people who are helping without metagaming. It's been a good introduction to the game for me. Quote
Paid Members JNLister Posted March 14, 2025 Paid Members Posted March 14, 2025 Played Bamboo, which has the unlikely scenario of being a Japanese family trying to feng shui their house. It's very simple in concept but with a minor brain-burner mechanism that would be far more complex to explain than play. Short version is that you only have four possible actions (get money/spend money buying stuff and put it in your house/take or complete an objective for placement of stuff in your hourse/take food because you need one food per thing in your house at the end of the round or get a penalty.) However, you "pay" for each action with a piece of bamboo that has a colour and an action, but all the bamboo you use in a turn has to be the same colour. You'll then get back the same number of bamboo but it will likely be a different combo of colours and actions. Most of the points come from completing objectives (which are as simple as "have a pot in your house" and as complex as "have these five things in this specific layout"), but there's a big penalty at the end if your house has more stuff/more valuable stuff on one side than the other. The theming is a bit of a stretch at times (no idea why you need more food as you get more belongings), but it's a nice combination of a few very simple mechanisms that interact to be more complex. Paid Members Nexus Posted March 14, 2025 Paid Members Posted March 14, 2025 Ooh are we D&D frothing? I've been in a 'campaign' of sorts (which is basically a series of one shots) for nearly a year, which is the longest I've played since university. I want to DM again but I also don't want to spend more than one evening out. I started with a Tiefling Warlock, but because the party was full of either D&D newbies or people who can't make a decision to save their lives, I ended up being the main face of the party. I got knocked down near the end of a combat and assumed we'd be fine, and I could be revived so kept telling people not to waste their slots on healing me, cos it would be fine, then I rolled a 1 on my death saves and that's all she wrote. Then rolled up a half-orc Paladin who was doing well until he had to do an acrobatics check to survive after killing a dragon - bullshit one roll fail death but w/e. Then a half-elf Monk who got bullshit shot by crossbows on a spiral staircase. Now I'm on an Aasimar War Cleric, who is thriving! I am appreciative of my DM, but he's very inflexible and occasionally feels like he just tries to fuck us over as players. Overall though, love this game. Quote

Really nice idea that I don't think I've seen anywhere else. David Sirlin’s “Yomi” does the fighting game turned into board game thing very well: https://www.sirlingames.com/yomi One simple mechanic I like is the zoning character steadily chips away one hit of health from you every interaction unless he’s knocked down, to replicate the feel of taking chip damage from sonic booms or tiger shots. Uses the staple blocks vs throws vs hits fighting game RPS too. The characters from Yomi are also in the fighting game Fantasy Strike, which is a very very stripped down version of a fighting game, aiming to remove execution barriers entirely and boil everything down to the decisions and spacing. So he made a board game out of fighting games then made a fighting game based on his board game which plays like a fighting game if fighting games were more like board games. He also started huffing his own farts and made a sequel to chess called Chess 2, which takes some astounding cojones. The less sad about that project the better. Yomi and Fantasy Strike are both excellent though. Edited March 14, 2025 by JLM Quote
