Wrestling Books

Bring Back Minipops

Recommended Posts

I've been on a bit of a reading binge over the last few weeks because we have super limited access in the flat at the moment and I deliberately filled my Kindle with books before leaving. So I read Foley's first book and really enjoyed it and I've been reading the 1PW book for the last week or so. I quite like the concept of having the story told through people who were there and whenever there are little bits of dispute, you can get both sides of the story and figure out what the truth probably was. I missed the vast majority of 1PW's history through not really being aware of British wrestling so I've learned a lot and now that I'm getting to the part that I'm familiar with, I'm sure I'll keep enjoying it the rest of the way through.

I think Regal's book might be next on the list. It's a toss-up between that and Jericho's second book.

Has anyone read Larry Zbyszko's book?

It's pretty hilarious. He talks about how Flair refused to work with him in WCW in '92 (yes, 92) because he was worried Larry would make him look bad, and then how Flair jumped to the WWF with the WCW Title in '93 because he didn't like Bill Watts. Jim Ross also hated Watts according to Larry.

In one Chapter he talks about how smart he was to no show some events during his feud with Bruno because it gave him tons of leverage and he was able to demand huge amounts of money from the Promoters to make sure he'd show up. A few Chapters later he says that Main Eventers who no show are total scumbags who hurt everybody else on the show as well as the company itself.

Oddly enough there's really no mention of his personal life, which you'd think would be relevant if for no other reason than he was married to Verne Gagne's daughter.

Just finished Chris Kanyons book last night after buying it after someone said good things about it on here. I'll preface it with how much I loved Mortis/Kanyon in wcw, but I thought it was utterly fantastic. First of all he's got some great stories from wrestling, Billy Kidman and porn, his cousin meeting Jim Mitchell, him and Wrath having to sit through Mitchells home made porno in which Mitchell wears the Mortis mask and sticks that cane inside this lady, and his mate phoning him pretending to be Savage all had me laughing out loud. Didnt realise he was such good mates with Kidman, and he was truthful and honest without coming aross as bitter with what happened in wwe. I also feel like a twat for not realising at the start that his mate Jim Mitchell was infact the Jim Mitchell that appeared in wcw, tna and such. Thought the name was just a coincidence.

He's also very honest and direct about his experiences and reading him talk about his bi-polar disorder and depression and how it manifested in different ways is eye opening. Its pretty morbid though as im sure everyone knows he committed suicide in 2010. The book is pretty hopeful in its tone so its quite melancholy and utterly heartbreaking to know that such a good guy couldnt go on with his life anymore. Tragic story, well worth reading for any wrestling fan. He doesnt really dish the dirt on wcw like maybe some people (me, included) expected, he only really seems to lay into Kevin Sullivan, Ernest Miller (though thats not even all that bad, its just "he didnt respect the business" type stuff) and later some non wrestling people from Turner who become in charge towards the end.

Quality read.

Regal's is one of my favourites. I picked it up at work on Boxing Day one year knowing it would be a boring long shift with nothing to do and managed to read it all in one day, but I mean that as a compliment, I just couldnt put it down.

Most but not all ;)

But yeah, there's a lot like that which are cheap but seem to be solely aimed at suckering people who'd buy anything to do with wrestling and then they turn out to pretty much be a slightly longer version of somebody's Wikipedia bio. Always download the free sample on the Kindle and you'll get a good idea.

Half way through Gary Hart's book and it's a good read so far. It started off a bit slowly as I really didn't know much about wrestlers or TV stations from the 50s. I'm now at the point where WCCW has started.

Next, I have Freddie Blassie's book to read. Has anyone read Bill Watts' book? Or perhaps the NWA monopoly book or Pain and Passion Stampede book? I've ordered the Gorgeous George biography, so that'll come after Freddie Blassie's. I got Blassie's for a few quid in hardcover in very good nick on eBay.
