Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted January 8, 2012 Paid Members Posted January 8, 2012 So, I made a pledge with myself a couple of days ago to watch at least one film every day for the whole year - but I really wish I hadn't started this pledge off with fucking Cello. By now you expect, in these K-Horror and J-Horror films, the usual vengeful ghoul / long haired scary girl / electronic device related jolts and you get them. That's not my issue with this film, though. My issues with it were:- 1) The acting was terrible. I mean, just really fucking terrible. When the only cast members to emerge with any credibility are a mute 11 year old and a comedy 6 year old you're in trouble. 2) The plot is completely all over the place. It throws plot points at you for an hour without resolving anything and then just resolves everything in the last half hour. Or so it thinks. There's a subplot involving a nasty student that goes precisely nowhere. Although she was bloody fit so I'm willing to overlook it. 3) The special effects are incredibly bad. It doesn't even have that many, but those it has it manages to fuck up spectacularly. 4) It tries to explain everything with a Triangle-esque twist:- <-- click on 'spoiler' to show/hide the spoiler ie: Ooh, it's actually a history repeating plot. The problem with this is that Triangle did it brilliantly and this doesn't because it leaves it to the last 5 minutes to tell us this and by then it's too fucking late to buy it. [close spoiler] ");document.close(); 5) But, before they try that one:- <-- click on 'spoiler' to show/hide the spoiler IT WAS ALL A DREAM. [close spoiler] ");document.close(); ANYTHING that ends that way needs to be dragged out into the street and curb-stomped by a barefooted fat tramp. With verrucas. It was so fucking bad that I nearly put it in my worst films of all time. To think that I chose this over watching Trespass again last night. I've only got myself to blame. 1 / fucking 10.
Loki Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 (edited) Ok, so listen up. I've just watched the (first 10 minutes of) the official WORST FILM EVER MADE. It was shown, amazingly on BBCfucking2 over Christmas, and caught my eye for obvious reasons even though I'd never heard of it: Yeah, Hulk Hogan and Robert Vaughan. Words cannot describe how incredibly bad this film is. Unfortunately, the only clip I can find is the first 8 minutes in Russian or something, but just ignore the voices and look at the film (oh and check the music) Edited January 8, 2012 by Loki
Paid Members Thunderplex Posted January 8, 2012 Paid Members Posted January 8, 2012 If you liked Triangle, track down Timecrimes. Amazing film that might be being remade by David Cronenberg.
Mr. Seven Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Saw the latest incarnation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. It's too long and retains many of the problems that dogged the source material but it is better than both the book and the original film. Rooney Mara is absolutely brilliant and Daniel Craig manages to make Blomkvist much less of the boring arechtype that he's previously been presented as. The direction and soundtrack are top notch. I still say the entire rape subplot could be excised though.

Which is fine, of course, but it's hilarious to see them treated like high art, just because they've got subtitles.
cobra_gordo Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Saw Goon last night. I quite enjoyed it but it's not the laugh-out-loud Dodgeballesque comedy they're making out with the trailer. It's a lot more serios and straight although there are one or two laughs. The Mrs thought it was a bit shit though.
Mr. Seven Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Oh yeah the books are total airplane novels and I do find it bizarre just how successful they've been. Still I think Fincher did the best job he could have with the material (although he really could have shaved off 20 minutes if not more). He didn't elevate it hugely, but the cast did a great job.
Loki Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Look, I don't think people are taking seriously just how bad McCinsey's Island is. Mrs Loki and I were at a loss as to how such a thing ever got made, and then having been made ever secured a release. I've worked on student films that were better shot with better special effects.Just as an example, they manage to fuck up every single eye line in the first 10 minutes of the film. Nobody is looking in the right place.
Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted January 8, 2012 Awards Moderator Posted January 8, 2012 Went to see The Artist yesterday. It is sublime. Just sublime. There was a round of applause at the end. A round of applause. At the cinema. I joined in. Once again, sublime. See it. But if you have a smaller or independent cinema near you (like the Tyneside in Newcastle, or City Screen (?) in York), see it there. It's not a multiplex, Odeon-y sort of a film. But see it. It will bring you joy.
d-d-d-dAz Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Had a slight film marathon last night and took on The Devils Double, Tucker and Dale versus Evil and Rubber. The Devils Double is far camper than I imagined, but actually really enjoyable. Dominic Cooper is quite fantastic in it, managing to play a role, then managing at the same time to play another role which attempts to be the same as the first role but with subtle differences. Good film. T+DVE is not the sort of film i'd usually watch, but it was far clever than these sort of films usually are so I quite enjoyed that. Rubber is impeccably shot, just beautiful. Don't get me wrong it's intellectual wankery of the highest order, wrapped in a coating of farce, and it's probably not as clever as it thinks it is. But, I enjoyed it. I'm not sure I could not enjoy a film about a serial killer pirelli tyre that telekinetically explodes rabbits heads.
Paid Members tom Posted January 8, 2012 Paid Members Posted January 8, 2012 Is The American worth watching? No spoilers, obviously
John Galt Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Is The American worth watching? No spoilers, obviouslyI loved it, a lot of people hated it. It depends if you're expecting the George Clooney is Bourne as promised by the lying trailer or if you're after the slow burning spy fiction of the film proper.
Paid Members Rob Lowe Posted January 9, 2012 Paid Members Posted January 9, 2012 I really liked the american too. (awful title though)I was surprised when I looked at reviews afterwards as it seems to have a mixed reaction. Its slow paced and suspenseful, its great.
FUM Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Finally just sat down and watched Drive. Fantastic film in my opinion. Ryan Gosling plays his part perfectly and the soundtrack is fucking tremendous.
Paid Members tom Posted January 9, 2012 Paid Members Posted January 9, 2012 (edited) I really liked the american too. (awful title though)I was surprised when I looked at reviews afterwards as it seems to have a mixed reaction. Its slow paced and suspenseful, its great. It's growing on me, but at times it felt like it was being slow just for the sake of it. Also some of the plot devices just seemed to go nowhere, although I suppose that's just missed opportunity as opposed to being overly poor and there were some things that I really liked in it tooOne of the more disappointing plot devices to me was SPOILER - Highlight the black box to read the priest; the spiritual talks were just reduced to Clooney constantly just doing the whole "I do what I need to" routine and there not being even any trace of the priest's words having any sort of effect on Clooney. I understand that the whole point is that he doesn't care too much about any sort of damnation that he's going to suffer as a result of his actions but in that case I don't really see why we had to go through stuff like them being silent over a pretty ghastly looking meal. I know it could be argued that the priests words later on wouldn't have been as meaningful if we hadn't of already seen their friendship develop, but it just seemed forced and mostly not necessary. The mechanic being the priests bastard son came across as pretty random too The film really builds up to a quiet crescendo towards the end though, with one of the things I liked a lot being SPOILER - Highlight the black box to read the growing sense of danger and the way everyone was painted out as a potential threat. The picnic scene with Mr Butterfly's favourite prossie was particularly tense and dramatic, even if it was potentially pretty easy to realise that she only had a gun because of the dangers of whoredom you still got led to believe that she was going to try and off him, for a few minutes at least Unfortunately, I thought it was pretty damn funny when SPOILER - Highlight the black box to read Clooney's would-be-killer blew herself off the roof; the idea of it was good but the execution was akin to slapstick with her just flying off the roof. I did like the idea of him being commisioned to make the gun that would be used take him out though. And the ending was very well done too Edited January 9, 2012 by tom
