Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted July 24, 2015 Moderators Share Posted July 24, 2015 I get that it is an influential landmark in film making history. But it's not that good a film to sit and watch now, is it?
W35ty
2. The Godfather You think it should be number 1 or you don't think it should be number 2? Because if it's the latter... The film isn't my cup of tea. I've never watched it all the way through.

Mr_Danger
The Third Man,Touch of Evil and Transformers:The Movie are much better Orson Welles films. Citizen Kane is very well acted and extremely well made but it's a bit of a chore.

Dr.PeterVenkman
Always thought the Godfather was overrated, Pacino's superb in it but always preferred Goodfellas for a mafia film, plus Goodfellas doesn't glorify the mafia like the Godfather did (the first one anyway)

In what way, explain?
Paid Members chokeout Posted July 26, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted July 26, 2015 None of the Godfathers glorify the Mafia, especially the first one. He's slowly forced into a business he wants nothing to do with, has to deal with everyone he loves dying, is forced to leave the woman he loves to go into hiding, has the next woman he loves die in front of him in a failed assisination attempt then re-finds love only to push her away becoming part of the family business. And that's just the first film!
WyattSheepMask
If anything, the first half of Goodfellas glorifies the mafia more than the three Godfarther movies
ultimo the great
They both glorify the mafia and then show you the comeuppance and both are fantastic. Need to rewatch them ASAP
Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted July 27, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted July 27, 2015 Personally – and I stress personally – I really hated the Godfather (and Goodfellas too, for reasons which I’ve stated before on here) as it just didn’t appeal to me or light up my insides in the slightest. I do quite like certain “mob” flicks and I loved Casino and didn’t actually mind Once Upon a Time in America (to stay within the realm of the genre), but I have sat through the Godfather trilogy twice (to spite myself and to see if maybe there was something wrong with my brain and if I would ‘get’ it on second viewing) but besides the James Caan and Al Pacino performances, I found it to be horrendously boring. Again, that’s just my opinion and the fact it doesn’t appeal to me does not mean I’m “trolling” anybody, before somebody takes offence to my disparaging remarks about what a lot of people deem ‘the greatest movie ever made’. Whereas, say, I can state Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is one of my favourite movies of all time, or Fight Club, or Crank, or Spinal Tap or the Big Lebowski or 12 Angry Men or Big Trouble in Little China or Aliens, and they have appealed to me and entertained me to the point of giving myself sticky undercrackers – unassisted – but if somebody said “They’re all shit” I wouldn’t deem it ‘trolling’ me, like Mr.Bacon did on some chap there. It’s just their preference, to be fair.
gbacon85
Mate, it was a joke. They're just films.
Paid Members chokeout Posted July 27, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted July 27, 2015 Any man that didn't like Godfather 1 or 2 and is still willing to sit through the third film twice is a glutton for punishment
Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted July 27, 2015 Awards Moderator Share Posted July 27, 2015 I don't know whether it was watching them knowing I'm supposed to think they're the greatest films ever made or not, but I felt the same about Godfather and Goodfellas. I can tell that objectively they're good films, well made, well acted, etc, but they just didn't connect with me like other films have.
