Paid Members Lorne Malvo Posted November 4, 2016 Paid Members Share Posted November 4, 2016 It shows how out of the loops I am with literature but I had no idea Franzen had a new book out! That's one item on the Christmas list anyway.

Merzbow
I'm 2 pages in to fear and loathing and it already reads like a middle class wanker trying desperately to be edgy, thank fuck it only cost me 20p.

The Gaffer
I crashed and burned about 50 pages into Against A Dark Backdrop, my first shot at an Iain M. Banks. I'm gutted because all his sci fi looks so cool but I just couldn't read the thing. It made me feel thick. Â I'm reading Shampoo Planet by Douglas Coupland at the moment. I love the author but it's clearly one of his more by-the-numbers books ("Mary-Kate and I would guzzle the capitalist cola and fall off the mall that night and float like kids forever..." etc etc). Girlfriend In A Coma and Life After God are two of my bestest books from that pained transition into my twenties though and I love this syrupy shit so I'll stick with it. Â I blasted through Porno in time to watch the Trainspotting 2 trailer, which I've done about fifty times now. It's bloody dense. It gets horribly boring for stretches but I love spending time with those characters and even when things look bleak a good descriptive Sick Boy bit will pique my interest again. Â I'm still gunning through Discworlds. Here's a quick take: Â Wyrd Sisters - Brilliant. Witches Abroad - The best. Guards! Guards! - Good, but I know better Watch books are to come. Lord & Ladies - Absoloute shite. Maskerade - Alright. These witches are wearing thin. Pyramids - Fantastic. Thief Of Time - Good. Â I'm going to do some Death ones next. Funny how Rincewind's right down the bottom of my priorities list. I remember Interesting Times being decent.

Don't think it'll go down well at work hah.  I'm currently reading Moby Dick and so far its a right laugh. I presumed it'd be all serious, and although there is a bit of a language barrier due to 'old timey' style speak, I'm really enjoying it. Only got a few more things on my shelf I haven't read, so I'll need to get some more books pretty soon!
Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted November 18, 2016 Moderators Share Posted November 18, 2016 Is Moby Dick good then? I was put off when someone told me there's lots and lots of detailed description using nautical terminology that was a bit tedious.
Moderators Astro Hollywood Posted November 18, 2016 Moderators Share Posted November 18, 2016 (edited) Is Moby Dick good then? I was put off when someone told me there's lots and lots of detailed description using nautical terminology that was a bit tedious. Â Same here. I was under the impression there's literally a whole chapter describing rope, so had initially assumed the "it's a right laugh" comment to be facetious. Paid Members Gus Mears Posted November 18, 2016 Paid Members Share Posted November 18, 2016 It's second only to Dr Zhivago in my 'classic books I fucking hated' list.
mikehoncho
Â This, plus re-reading one my David Icke books, AND also ploughing through Adrian Street's 7-volume autobiography.
Mr.E
 Is Moby Dick good then? I was put off when someone told me there's lots and lots of detailed description using nautical terminology that was a bit tedious.  Same here. I was under the impression there's literally a whole chapter describing rope, so had initially assumed the "it's a right laugh" comment to be facetious.  WELL, in fairness I'm less than 100 pages in, but so far I'm really enjoying it. The main character, Ishmael, is the "narrator" of the story, with the initial chapters being about his friendship with "savage" Queequeg, which has genuinely made me smile at times.  There has only been one chapter that was a bit "meh" to me, but that been it so far. The biggest issue seems to be the way its written, which has taken me some time to get used to. That's not to say by the time it gets going into the actual whaling it wont be boring as sin....but I'll keep you updated.  I've also got Dracula and Frankenstein to read, are they any good? Keith Houchen
I loved Moby Dick, but some of the chapters that are more like a biology lesson and how to tie ropes and sails can grate a bit. Overall though, yeah I loved it.

I skipped all the tedious chapters about ships and 'cetology' when I read Moby Dick. Stick to the chapters about the plot and it's pretty good. Â Dracula is one of my favourite books so I would definitely recommend that. Frankenstein I've read a few times and it's fine, but the words "begone" "wretch" and "countenance" turn up again and again which irritated me. Mr.E
Cool, I'll get onto those next then. Plus that will save me some time on Moby Dick, skipping a few bits. I just read a long chapter about a priest giving a sermone and it was a bit boring, everything else has been good though.
