I think part of it is that English football fans love to belittle the Scottish League with their ALWAYS ABSOLUTELY HYSTERICAL BANTER about it being a farmers league, low attendance etc. (honestly its hilarious every single time!!!!!)

If you are Scottish and that sort of bullshit upsets you, the counter argument is that Rangers or Celtic could theoretically compete in the premier league if they had premier league money.

‘Scottish football is shite’ is right up there with ‘you do realise wrestling isn’t real, don’t you?’ as far as lines people should permanently retire go. And similarly to people commenting on how ‘real’ wrestling is, the comments about Scottish football often come from people who don’t watch it in the first place.

Is there the level of player as you’d see in the English Premier League? Of course not, given the gulf in finances, how could there be?

But is it entertaining and a lot of fun to watch? Absolutely. There are always great stories to follow both on and off the field, and most clubs have fans that genuinely care and are passionate about their clubs, making games enjoyable experiences.

If you don’t enjoy Scottish football, that’s fine. A lot of people do, and I’m one of them.

Europa League 2025 winner Mikey Moore :)

I don't think I'd say Scottish football is shit, it's just I have zero interest in it but that's more a general malaise, more than anything.

Having said that I will of course be watching the final day of the season!

Someone said earlier in the thread that there's only ever two winners of the league. While that is true (could change on Saturday) I think it misses the point of football.

There are literally millions of people in the UK who support a team who have a microscopic chance of winning a league title (insert Spurs joke here). Does that mean they are not worth supporting? (another spurs joke in here as well)

I have a friend who is a lifelong fan of Motherwell. He is saying The Well are playing the best football in his entire life. He's desperate to see them potentially secure a spot in the European Conference League. Now if you are a fan of a club the size of Liverpool then that probably sounds laughable. The UECL probably doesn't even seem worth the effort. The point is that its all relative and this would be massive for a club like Motherwell.

I think unless they are your direct rivals, even the most myopic football fan would say that's a good thing and a worthy achievement. But maybe that's the romantic in me, as I do feel romantic about football (or at least used to)

This thread has some of the best nuanced discussion around football, and I'm sure most posters would say Motherwell achieving a European place is a good thing.

Growing up my best mate was a huge Dundee United fan, and when we'd had a few he would ALWAYS put on the UEFA Cup run tape, which when you think about that achievement now, is utterly mind blowing.

And you're right, the majority of football fans will never, or very seldom, see their teams win anything, so a qualification like that is just as worth celebrating.

This part is easily refuted nonsense. The Scottish Premiership has the highest attendances in Europe per head of population.

Of course, a real issue is people from places like Inverness, Perth or Ayr electing to choose one of Celtic or Rangers over their local team but to say that nobody goes to watch Scottish football is demonstrably false.

When you have to add a qualifier it makes your point meaningless.

Millwall are the best team in London, that starts with an M.

Most OLD HEADS would agree that Scottish Football was at its best when Celtic, Rangers, Dundee United and Aberdeen were all strong teams. Regardless of the outcome of Saturday, it's good for the league if Hearts and Motherwell continue to be very good sides. Celtic will probably improve as its hard to imagine them having a worse summer / management botch than this.

Hopefully Rangers go into administration though

Scottish Football can be great. It's got great old clubs, it's got unique grounds, it's entrenched in community, it's a talent factory and it's got clubs with genuine european football heritage. Unfortunately, it's constantly let down by the pandering to two (horrendous) clubs, the entire league being set up so they play each other all the time and disproportionate distribution of income. That income has been dire at times too with the poor TV deals and lack of sponsorship. The SPFL have loads in common with the RFL. They both have a great product but are utterly incapable of marketing it and seem more concerned with not upsetting a couple of clubs rather than selling their league.

I think it will be the worst thing that could happen for Scotland if, despite being a fucking shambles at times, Celtic go win the league anyway. Someone should have been in Beaton's ear last night shouting "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING? This is the first interesting thing to happen up here since we found that Tunnock's Teacake farm."

Southampton have absolutely fucked these play-offs, the cheating berks that they are. Less than 9 days to go and we've got no KO time and no ticket info. Depending on the news source, the speculated outcomes are Hull City vs. Southampton, Hull City vs. Middlesbrough, Hull City are just promoted or the game is postponed and rearranged. What a shambles.

Yeah it's really not fair on Hull most of all, and if Southampton are expelled, there will be an appeal process and a legal shitstorm which will rail on for ages, so nothing will be properly resolved for ages.

I genuinely think Hull should just be given a bye. They've done nothing wrong, Boro really don't deserve their place in a final they didn't qualify for, and Southampton don't deserve the place either if they're found guilty.

I still think it's absolutely rank how Boro have worked with the Mail and Telegraph on this whole affair though. Ongoing investigation that they're desperate to have done with as soon as possible and they're leaking personal information to those rags. It's grim all round.

Either promote Hull, or say only two go down from the Premier League this season, thanks :)

You could argue Middlesbrough were cheated out of them, so they do deserve it. I think they wouldn't want to give Hull a bye purely because that game gets a huge attendance and would be a huge loss money wise. I understand why people think a bye would be fair though.

I think it's bizarre they didn't have a fixed punishment in place. Like a 3-0 forfeit of the game.

I think that would depend on whether they are guilty of spying on Boro or spying on everyone. If it's been systematic all season, then Wrexham have been shafted too.

I can't see any way in which they come up with a bye though, that would be extraordinary.

Believe that is one of the options that would see Boro through. Certainly from the stuff I've watched on it, anyway.

The EFL have made a statement: https://www.efl.com/news/2026/may/14/efl-statement--sky-bet-championship-play-off-final/

Absolute shambles all round.

Is there a bigger "go fuck yourselves" than this?
