No love for Magic Penny?

The teacher that picked our school "hymns" must have been a proper hippy.  As well as Magic Penny we had Joan Baez numbers, which obviously I didn't know were Joan Baez songs when I was 7.

It's funny how things stick with you isn't it? I remember we had a funky guitar player who'd come in once a week and play hymns for a break from the norm. Her name was Robin and she might've been the first person I loved ?

All about this wasn't it? The most important song book ever?

I've been learning to play The Building Song from that, as that was one we used to sing at assembly.

This was my primary schools hymnbook of choice. They were years old and tatty, unless you were one of the lucky few that got one of the new batch where the flowers were in a somewhat psychedelic pink and orange.

Alongside the usual Morning Has Broken, and Kum Ba Yah, it also appealed to us boys with 5,4,3,2,1 (a song about astronauts), and When A Knight Won His Spurs.

Middle school had this pocket sized marvel:

Morning%2520Has%2520Broken-%2520Hymns%2520to%2520Sing%2520and%2520Play.jpg

This little wonder enabled me to learn how to sing the chorus to All Things Bright And Beautiful backwards, a skill I've retained to this day.
