That was always the routine for nights out, admittedly that was in our younger days when such things were a regular scenario.

I’m not arsed about the other matches. That main event was just nuts.

Not that it was great, but just very telling. Cody just didn’t matter at all - they gave him the primary school trumpets and fanfare befitting of a Wrestlemania entrance - but it just didn’t matter. Roman Reigns is the king. The man drips class. Give him the belt back for ten more years.

Oh and The Rock came back. Don’t care. It’s all about Roman.

Yeah, sex is great, but have you ever seen a CM Punk match when he’s got a massive chip on his shoulder after being politicked out of a main event spot by The Rock? Did it with The Undertaker at Wrestlemania. Did it again here.

That Hell in a Cell was an absolute ripper. Unbelievable. Pure violence. Legendary blade job from Drew. Wild action. CM Punk bumping like a fucking maniac, seemingly doing everything possible to get himself injured so he doesn’t have to suck a blood money covered dick at Crown Jewel. WWE match of the year. I’ve never felt so alive!

I take it all back. Nearly a year of thinking Punk was washed and his best work was behind him. He looked the fucking man here. They did it. Completely salvaged the feud by going out on the highest of highs. Do not waste this man on Seth Rollins going forward. He needs to be mixing it up with the Big Boys like Roman, Cody and The Rock. Whoever out of those three ends up being the odd man out at Mania, slot Punk in there against them. Roman vs. CM Punk and Cody vs. Rock sure sounds like the biggest double main of all time.

Fucking hell though. Those final five minutes! I’d forced myself to accept it wasn’t happening. Stop being a Fantasy Booking Wanker. It was so obviously going to be Cody, Kevin, Orton and Roman against Bloodline Hollywood at Survivor Series. The Bloodline Civil War was just a silly pipe dream. They wouldn’t actually do it.

And then Jimmy Uso and The fucking Rock turned up.

Is it? Could it be?!

I thought the whole event had a hard time following that wild opener, best HIAC match in years and a worthy finish to that epic feud.

I thought the opening match was great, I don't watch much WWE these days admittedly but it felt like the most brutal WWE match I've seen in a long long time.  Has to be one of the best PPV/PLE openers of all time.

Sadly I thought the rest of the show wasn't very good. Liv and Rhea was a meh match that didn't get much reaction because everyone was waiting for Dom to get involved and the finish was absolutely rotten, Balor vs Priest felt like a decent TV match at best, Nia vs Bayley was a sloppy mess with a couple of shocking botches and I thought the main event was just there. The last 5 or 10 minutes did pick up and get hot to be fair and the crowd were mega into all the drama so job done there but it wasn't anything I'll remember for very long.

That Triple H Saudi Arabia title announcement segment was also several shades of shite. The belt looks ugly and the stipulations sound daft to me, why get yourself into a position where you have to beat one of your world champions every year at Crown jewel? They used to do that shit at Survivor Series every year and I always thought it was silly to make one of your world champs look inferior to the other. Even if it's obvious one is inferior don't make it official!

So yeah, they're red hot, the opener was brilliant, Rock returning will probably make them even hotter and it doesn't really matter in the long run but I didn't think much of Bad Blood.

Nia Jax’s performance needs to be seen to be believed. After improving tonnes the last year or so, this was a real throwback. She looked fucking terrible. Screwing up everything, Bayley struggling to get anything out of her. I'll remember Nia's attempt at a Hurricarana for the rest of my days. For as much as CM Punk returned to his peak form in the opener, Jax returned to her peak form in the following match. The wildest ends of the spectrum. Absolute dog shit.

Bill Goldberg sniffing around when the Saudi money's up for grabs. Never change, Bill. I'll take a three minute Gunther vs. Goldberg sprint. Maybe they can throw another curve ball and have Goldberg cost Gunther the belt on Monday. I'll be pulling for Sami Zayn like HBK pulling for the Blackburn Rovers.

Liv was Liv. She’s just rubbish once the bell rings. Then. Now. Forever. It’s a great idea bringing back Raquel as her heater. I remember she had great chemistry with Rhea in NXT. The matches will improve dramatically switching Liv out for Raquel. Let Liv just dick about, doing the character work. She’s great at that.

Terrifying stunt with Dom hanging upside down. Never mind how easily he could have injured his leg, if that goes wrong he lands on his head on the concrete! Maybe Hunter really isn’t reading the lawsuits or watching the Netflix documentaries. I can’t imagine doing that stunt a week after the Vince documentary comes out, covering the Owen Hart accident.

Speaking of Papa H, is it even a WWE pay per view if he doesn’t pop on the RESPECTABLE SPECTACLES to give a bad answer to a question he knew was coming, with sufficient time to prepare?

On the plus side, this rules. They shot an amazing angle only picked up by fans with their cell phones. The future is now! Sorry Cody, but you had it coming!

And best of all? This takes Cody in a completely different direction, away from the Bloodline, suggesting we could actually get Sami and Jey. Considering the pop Jimmy got, imagine when the talented, over lads get on board!

Great show, if only for the opener and main event. I've watched The Rock's return about ten times. The pop is amazing. The entrance is still incredible. Remember when they fucked it all up earlier in the year? There are pivots that work and then there are pivots that work so unbelievably well that you have tonnes of different options and they are all the greatest thing imaginable. Bloodline Civil War Games. Roman vs. Cody 3. Cody vs. Rock. Heel Rock vs. Babyface Roman! All amazing.

*Bret needs to speak to Punk about that Sharpshooter though. Awful. Why do so many wrestlers do it so wrong? I swear, I could execute it better when me, my bother and our friends would play wrestling in Primary School!

It wouldn’t be a WWE press conference if Triple H didn’t channel his inner Partridge at least once.

I mean, honestly, all he had to do here was point out that it’s something they’re actively addressing, with Oba Femi and Trick Williams among the top prospects in the company; Carmello Hayes being a high draft pick and Xavier Woods challenging for the IC title tomorrow. The most stupid thing of all is that I think they very likely are trying to find Black main eventers, even if it’s for financial reasons as opposed to moral. 

It’s amazing that at a time wrestling is better than it’s ever been, we end up talking about the head bookers of both major promotions saying something daft and avoidable at the end of almost every PPV.

The Hell in a Cell was match of the year so far, for me. 

There was an incredible minute or two where I was just thinking "Man this is great, those 'They're feuding over beads!' arguments felt a little reductive and here they are washing them down in blood" and then Drew gets out a SACK OF BEADS and literally pours them over the match, before throwing himself arse first into the steel steps like Begbie flinging a pint off the balcony. Chain around the knee, eat the fucking beads.

What an incredible finish to a match that's brought meaning back to having the cell for your blow off feud.

I cringed so bad at Drew's bump into the edge of the steps. It was the most violent part of the match for me. Great stuff.

I saw the highlights of Smackdown and Nia doing some sort of push move and a senton and thought I'd imagined the rumour she had gotten good. Hearing about her performance on this show and seeing even in WWE's own highlights Bayley have to spend a lifetime explaining the next spots to her was reassuring that whoever made up that rumour is a big fat liar.

Love him or hate him, The Rock is still such a star. Rock vs Cody will be a corker.

I’m very curious as to what the crowd reaction will be for this one. It would be bizarre - but entirely possible - that The Rock match becomes the reason fans turn on Cody, just a year after Cody became the reason fans turned on Rock.
