Most Overrated Christmas Films

I adore It's A Wonderful Life but it does remind me that when I worked in Community Engagement for a housing provider, I came up with a Christmas film 'roadshow' where I would visit all the retirement homes in a 2 week period armed with my projector, big screen and DVDs and screen a festive film for all the residents in their communal room.

It was lovely, we provided mince pies and mulled wine (which spilled in my car and my ex absolutely fumed as I didn't get it cleaned straight away. She was right to be angry) but due to health and safety and safeguarding I had to be in the room whilst the film played.

I took a selection of films but of course they all wanted It's A Wonderful Life, which meant that one year I watched it 10 times in 2 weeks, and I did hate it that year to be honest.

Wasn't Jim Carrey in that really weird rotoscoped/motion captured version of A Christmas Carol in 3D a few years back as well? It was one of those "this movie is in 3D so we'll have loads of stuff flying towards the camera" movies that were so prevalent at the time.

If we're having the Die Hard debate can I further posit that Rocky IV is also a Christmas movie? He unites east and west on Christmas day through the power of boxing.

I assumed he was jusr gullible enough to fall for Sir Humphreys tory policies

There is that, but if you also look at the historical era that YM started with, but also the overall characterisation of not just him but his colleagues and his relationship (i.e. antagonistic) with leftie characters, there's enough there to deduce. At best, he's a "soft" Tory or a Lib Dem (but the Liberals, SDP, LibDems haven't been anywhere near government by themselves since WWI).

Sounds like right wing tory talk to me, he's a picture boy socialist who puts the overall good of his society above himself and fights tooth and nail against larger, stronger and richer potter.

No one makes him stay, he chooses to. No one makes him give out his money to keep the building and loan going, he chooses too. He also stands up to the town more than once to make sure they are collectively stronger.

Yes, and look how he gets treated. Everyone pretty much uses him as a stepping stone to improve themselves. It's like George McFly the movie. It basically teaches you the more you do for others not only helps them, but doesn't stop your own troubles because your own life isn't improved by those actions. I just find it depressing if anything and to be honest, right wing tory talk is probably right. They watch this as a guide as to what happens if you act unselfishly.

It's a well made, well acted film, but it ain't the greatest film, nor the greatest Christmas film. Which is why I nominated for most overrated Christmas film, because for me it is up there.

No they don't, other people better themselves with his support, and they support him at the end.

That you see him and that mentally as weak says more about you than how he's written.

Edit: it's nothing like George McFly, who was a selfish pervert not a man working hard for and with other people.

Everyone is better of and the people you helped give you 25k? Yeah fuck that.

Honestly based on your posts I don't think you've actually watch the fucking film here chief.

I’ve re watched it (it was either that or try and complete Stray before AEW Dynamite and the film won)

random observations of the film

Spoiler

The angels are arseholes to Clarence.

Mr Gower does some great drunk acting. George is annoying here, just ignoring instructions, but he didn’t deserve that beating.

Jimmy’s been on screen 20 seconds and already I love him. Violet giving me strong Cyndi Lauper vibes.

He can sure bust some moves. George Bailey would have loved Northern Soul nights.

Why is there a crow in the office?

Mr Potter is a Tory. George would have definitely been Corbynista.

I didn’t remember the sex joke!

Him snapping at Uncle Billy was pure Flanders snapping in the Simpsons. Jimmy Stewart is fantastic isn’t he?

That torch was bloody powerful. I’ve seen less bright floodlights at a night time football match.

Ok so the film builds up to what life is like without George in it. Obviously the town folk are way worse off without him, but it’s the last 15 minutes or so, surprised it took so long to get there.

The end. I mean it’s heartwarming that that all the folks who George helped get together to give him the money needed (I assume, we don’t know the total raised but looks a lot). That said, George is in this position because he’s uncle lost the fucking money.

No one makes him stay is true, but he feels compelled to save his Dad’s legacy. And then thinks his brother will come back to take the reigns and doesn’t (and there’s a great tracking shot where you can see he’s devastated but he does it when no one is looking at him). He can’t leave because every time he tries something else stops him. I agree with the rest of that though.

Yeah I was wrong completely wrong there. It’s not his mental weakness, it’s feeling he’s doing the right thing because he has strong morals and a will to better peoples lives. A real role model. As for the £25k, that’s from his mate alone, who’s obviously done well thanks to his career in plastics, not what the townsfolk raised.

His sacrifices have enriched the people in town, and everyone associated with him, but I still don’t think it pays off as successfully for him as you do. Just my obviously awful opinion on the film.

Christ, imagine nominating It's A Wonderful Life. Fucking hell.

Yeah, cos it’s the overrated Christmas film thread and this is incredibly highly rated by people. I enjoyed it more than I remembered, but I still think it’s a very good film but not as highly regarded as the rest of the world do. The acting is excellent though, especially Jimmy Stewart. What a performance.

As a big Christmas Carol fan I saw that on the cinema and it was pretty shit. The only time I saw a film in 3D at the cinema too.
