How do you solve a problem like the AEW roster?

It's about what your shows are.

Wednesday is obviously the A-show so what about the others?

The 2nd show on TNT I would make an womens exclusive show.

The Monday YouTube show could be a show where you take 20 guys and have them compete in a league competition. 5 matches a show lasting 38 shows with the Top 8 in a post-season with the winner getting a shot at the AEW title.

With working relationships with other companies you can send younger talent to Japan and Mexico for a couple of months when possible and get them better. You could send guys to the G1/BOSJ/Tag tournaments.

There’s a good amount who are on 10k tier zero contracts that just stop them appearing anywhere else for a few months. At the moment it’s wise to have a bloated roster, as you want bodied in the event of say a massive Covid spread at a show, you have other bodies to bring in and make tv. There’s fair few who shouldn’t be around yet, and ideally should be in some form of developmental but are getting a place for being there when shirt handed.

I don't begrudge anyone getting their beak wet if there's money floating around, but if charged with cutting a scythe through the roster, I'd dump:

Everyone in the Dark Order except John Silver and 10

Brandon Cutler

Christopher Daniels

Chuck Taylor and Trent

Jake Hagar

Kip Sabian

Luther

Max Caster

Matt Sydal + brother

Michael Nakazawa

Peter Avalon

QT Marshall

Justin Roberts

Jim Ross

Alex Marvez

Looking at the women's roster, it doesn't seem that bloated to be honest, though there are a couple there that I don't recognise (Mel?). I'd probably give them a stay of execution for now, getting rid of the above might give them some more TV time to develop. Actually I don't know if they're still bringing in Yuka Sakazaki, but I'd bin her off just to stop Excalibur shouting "The Magical Girl!" in a really creepy way.

As someone else mentioned I'd probably keep Jack Evans and Angelico around as a jobber tag team. Same for people like Colt Cabana and Frankie Kazarian.

Getting rid of the majority of one of your most over acts in the Dark Order and keeping the comedy one with nobody else to bounce off and the body one with nothing else going on is a bad take. Also getting rid of Max Caster when he's one of their hottest prospects but keeping his partner who I can't even remember the name of is rough too. Jake Hagar is a good shout though as he's had about 2 matches since debuting and he must be on a pretty decent contract.

Max Caster is a genuinely exciting new act that actually stands out when he’s given television time. They’d be mad to let him go.

Man, i always thought Jack Evans is someone they should push more.

He must be close to 40 at this stage though.

Doing exercises like this as a fan often boils it down to personal opinion, and naturally so.

Personally, Jack Evans gets on my tits & has done since I first set eyes on him nearly 2 decades ago, so he'd be gone for me.

On the other hand, loads of people here saying Kip Sabian would be first out the door for them, but I've got a soft spot for him because he's a local lad, I've seen him wrestle live dozens of times, and I sat next to his parents (who were bemused at what was going on) at show once, so he'd definitely be a keeper for me.

I think he's genuinely awful.

The Acclaimed would be a featured act for me, they absolutely capture the young and edgy feel AEW shout be going for. I don’t know why they’re not using more of their music/diss videos on Dynamite, it’s a fantastic substitute for a promo and really sets them apart.

The Acclaimed have strong early New Age Outlaws vibe to them. They're fresh, hungry and got potential but haven't quite put the pieces together just yet. I'm excited to see them develop.

I think the roster will naturally thin out post-Covid - partly because they won't need so many "back-up" wrestlers in case of a Covid outbreak, but mostly because the wrestlers they have their eyes on as potential future roster members will be able to gain experience working indie shows more often, and only getting brought in to Dark once in a blue moon. To look at the current AEW roster as something equivalent to the WWE's roster is probably incorrect; it's like also including all the local talent and try-outs that used to show up on Heat and Metal as WWF full-timers.

Looking through for people who I think could be cut and have nothing lost, though, I think you could reasonably do away with the following:

Brandon Cutler - I just don't see what he brings to the table that others don't

Top Flight (Angelo Dorado & Dante Martin) - I like these guys, but they're a vanilla babyface high-flying tag team in a company with no shortage of that.

Lee Johnson - Again, he's filling a "talented wrestler" spot that there's no shortage of. And trimming the fat in terms of people I couldn't pick up out of a line-up in the Nightmare Family would work to bring that faction into some kind of focus.

Michael Nakazawa - There are better comedy workers out there, and many on the AEW roster already.

Peter Avalon - As above.

QT Marshall - Finish his break-up with Dustin Rhodes and sack him off. Again, adds nothing, muddies the waters of what the Nightmare Family is all about. Get that faction down to the bare minimum.

Mel - I'm not even sure who this is.

Leva Bates - One of the weaker wrestlers on the women's roster, get rid.

I'd be able to find spots for a lot of the people that have been mentioned by others - Luther, the Gunn Club, Jack Evans, and so on - so I don't think they're the worst of it. But the list above is who I see as people you could get rid of and not lose anything by doing so.

I know it's not what you meant, but that line seemed really dark when I first read it.

Anyone who says during a promo that Andrew Cuomo has blood on his hands is alright by me. If he slanders Piers Morgan live on Dynamite I might actually buy my first wrestling t-shirt in 21 years in the Acclaimed shirt
