So I’ve been in New York for the last few days, and as some of you know I do the Inside Oz Podcast, and along with other stuff, I’ve taken the opportunity to visit a bunch of Oz related locations.

Chelsea Market on West 15th St & 9th Avenue is where the show filmed between Series 1 & 4, filming on the top two floors. The building has undergone a tonne of renovations since the show filmed there so it’s pretty impossible to say “oh that’s such & such” in terms of what used to be the set, but I can at least say that I’ve been in Oz. 

Across the street from there is The Old Homestead Steakhouse, which was used for the crime flashback of Nino Schibetta during Series 1

Over on Doyers St in Chinatown, the Nom Wah Tea Parlour was used as the location for Jia Kenmin’s crime flashback during Series 4

 

A couple of years back ‘Zo’, a short film that hinted at a new rivalry between Beecher & O’Reily was filmed in New York City. O’Reily makes his way through NYC on route to confront Beecher, who’s holed up in the Chelsea Savoy Hotel on the corner of West 23rd St & 7th Ave

The big one though saw me take the train upstate to Ossining to visit the Sing Sing Correctional Facility, which doubled as the exterior of the Oswald Maximum Security Penitentiary the handful of times we saw the outside of the prison, most notably during Beecher’s “release” in the S4B Finale. You may also recognise it from the opening shots of King of New York (Doyers St and the Nom Wah appears in that too)

 

As I was making my way around the perimeter wall I tried to get a picture of one of the signs, but a guard in one of the Watch Towers was very quick in asking what I was doing. I explained why I was there and wanted to do and they were very nice but were adamant that there was no picture taking, and I wasn’t going to argue.
Once I got off the prison grounds however, I snapped a couple of pictures as I was on a public street by that point

That looks like what was in the background when they evacuated the prison in the final episode after Keller unleashed the deadly toxin.

It certainly was, all the buses leave up Correctional Facility Rd (same as Beecher did when driven away after being paroled) which goes around the perimeter wall to the prison’s East. There used to be a bent Stop sign near the rear gate (which is actually the Deliveries Entrance). It was there for years, but sadly it’s been removed

If you can afford it, do it. Best holiday I’ve ever had.

Not going to lie, it can be an expensive City, especially if you’re in Manhattan like we were for the majority of it, but considering what we were doing and where we were staying, it was good value for money. We had floor tickets for a show at MSG, took in a Broadway show, did two observation decks, the Statue of Liberty, an MLB game,  American Museum of Natural History, the majority of Central Park, a night at Birdland Jazz Club, the 9/11 Museum & Memorial.
Then on top of that budgeting for food, the subway, the Long Island Rail Road from to & from the airport, 5 nights Hotel in in Midtown, Visas for two people & flights, we did the whole for about £5,300 all in. A lot of money, but I’d do it all again in a heartbeat

Absolutely a blast and yeah for two of us it was really good value, especially as my wife seemed determined to drink the city cocktail supply dry. If you don’t want to stay in Midtown Manhattan there’s good savings to be made looking at Long Island City which is only 10 minutes away on the Subway.

We arrived home this afternoon but I’m going to be thinking & talking about it for a long time. We’ve been going through the photos and I’m going to have this one blown up and framed.

We stayed at the New Yorker, I finally got to go to MSG (was directly underneath the central unit in the roof and I nearly burst into tears of joy) and you’ve then got the Empire State Building tying it all together.

When I went to get the picture at the Chelsea Savoy, I realised I was just one block over from where KISS shot the cover for ‘Dressed To Kill’, so decided I had to go and pose like Paul Stanley and make my own bit of KISStory while I was in the area

 

Anyway, I’ll stop now as I’m sure I’m annoying the crap out of everybody

Had to visit New York a few years ago for work and was casually walking through central park when i spotted someone I recognised playing softball in the park…….

Went to Vancouver for our honeymoon. What an absolutely incredible place. I would move there in a heartbeat if I could. This was at Whistler which was just beautiful.
