One factor also is that, ultimately, nothing like that had been done before at the time. The idea of doing a single 12 hour film and splitting it into three releasing a part each year wasn't done. Now everything seems to feel like it needs to be part of a franchise and shared universes and all that sort of nonsense and people will release a part 1 with a part 2 to follow for what feels like any old shite. For better or worse LOTR was a hugely ambitious project that hadn't really been done before so it made sense that they'd reward it all at the end rather than (theoretically) throwing everything at it every year. The earlier films in the trilogy did pick up things but could understand why they held off on Best Picture until it was done even if it wasn't necessarily the best of the three.

Watched The Creator recently. It looked absolutely beautiful but the story itself was incredibly boring and ham fisted. There's a bit in this where the main character looks at an old video of his dead wife laughing and says out loud to himself "good times!". Gareth Edwards has been a disappointment as a director. I feel like he needs to get some jobs as a hired hand type director under his belt to improve rather than positions himself as a writer/director auteur type.

I quite liked it and he deserves credit for making such an amazing looking film for such a comparatively mid-range budget, but his story and character work are not his strong points. He hasn't really developed in those fronts since Monsters, which is still the best thing he's done.

Napoleon

Quite underwhelming. Nothing really standout. Other than the frozen lake scene (which was pretty cool), the battles were all quite generic.

I've read some quotes from Ridley Scott about the issues some historians have had, and he comes across as a bit of a prick. Not sure if this is standard for him or not?

Whilst not the main character, he is featured a lot in “G’olè - The official film of the 1982 World Cup”

Thanks for at least dragging something mildly amusing out of someone making the exact same joke that was just made twice
