Merzbow Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Yeah, the Steamdeck was never going to last long when playing bigger current gen games. It's limit is really PS4 level stuff, still an amazing bit of kit with 1000's of games but there's only so much horsepower you can fit in a handheld. Quote

To be honest, I’ve had very little in the way of issues with current-gen games. Ratchet & Clank plays tremendously well, as do Elden Ring, Spider-Man, Street Fighter 6, Sonic Frontiers and Hogwarts Legacy. Remnant 2 has been an exception in that it’s earned the green verified tag, but really shouldn’t have. I’m interested to see how it handles a game like Starfield; though given the existence of the Series S, I suspect Xbox games will be fairly well placed to work well on the Deck going forward. Quote
DavidB6937 Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Steam Deck will last me for a good while because between the games that do work, the emulators and the streaming off Game Pass I've already got WAY too much to play without worrying too much about the top tier games.. which I can play on my PS5 if I get desperate anyway. Only thing I'm hoping is the new not-FIFA works as I'd like a decent handheld football experience having always been shat on with the FIFA legacy crap on Switch. I don't know too much about AAA gaming and handhelds but there's obviously still a way to go with bringing battery life up to speed etc. Quote

It’s been an absolute godsend for me for the triple A stuff since my daughter was born. I wouldn’t have the opportunity to play much of anything if not for the ability to play it on a handheld. I usually play the AAA stuff with the Deck plugged in, so battery life never becomes an issue. Even without a baby, I would typically do prefer to play top tier games on a handheld. I’m not sure why exactly, but I do tend to enjoy the experience more. Edited July 30, 2023 by RedRooster Quote
DavidB6937 Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Its definitely interesting to see how different people use it. I think for me it's been a good opportunity to catch up with games I've missed over the years due to the kids and work etc. So I've been doing some of the last few Assassins Creeds for example. And I've always loved retro games so a lot of my time goes on those too. They're just easier to dip in and out of. But yeah I also want to play stuff like Hogwarts but only so many hours in the day right ? Quote

Hogwarts Legacy would probably fit how you’re using it well actually, you can break it up into bite-sized chunks pretty easily by dipping into play a mission or sidequest in between whatever life throws at you. That’s how I played it, actually. Revisiting some of the retro stuff has been fun, although I’ve not dipped into emulation. I’ve tried quite a few non-Steam games, such as Sonic Triple Trouble 16-bit; and I’ve also enjoyed modding. Left4Dead 2 is infinitely better when you replace all the zombies with Zoidbergs. Quote
Only_The_Strong_Survive Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 Another one late to the party for but Jedi Fallen Order is a lot of fun. seems to have a lot of bugs though like audio unsynced and I managed to fall off the map. Quote
Merzbow Posted August 3, 2023 Posted August 3, 2023 (edited) So we've possibly got the first serious case of the Series S holding back games, Baldurs Gate 3 is postponed with no set release on Xbox because Larian have been having issues with the weaker console. The main issue is getting split screen working at an acceptable standard, and co-op multiplayer is a big part of this D&D game. Edited August 3, 2023 by Merzbow Quote

I love my Series S, but it feels inevitable that they will have to shift away from their stance on compatibility as this generation progresses. Quote
Merzbow Posted August 3, 2023 Posted August 3, 2023 Especially when there's already talk of "Pro" consoles, at least on the Sony side. I think we'll get to a point like with the Switch where the most demanding games are Cloud only on the S. Quote
Cousin Jim Bob Posted August 3, 2023 Posted August 3, 2023 The series S can run Baldurs Gate 3 in single and online multiplayer. The problem is the developers are having trouble getting local co-op running working on the S. That could just be their own programmers. Microsoft are barely past still offering Xbox One versions of new games. They are not about to move away from the S. Quote
Merzbow Posted August 3, 2023 Posted August 3, 2023 Local co-op needs to process a whole lot of game, twice, and to be fair there's a reason splitscreen isn't much of a thing today. Quote

Although it’s verified, it doesn’t run well at all. It should never have earned the verified tag. They’ve patched it and it works pretty well now, so you can ignore this warning. Quote

I don’t think that’s truly the case. Goldeneye had split screen. Lots of PS1 games had split screen. There are “modern” games that have split screen such as Rocket League. You’d have one instance of the game, but just a different “camera” per player. Quote
