If Khabib accepts Pettis at this late stage then he'll have essentially had three different opponents to plan for in just a week, which is insane. How many fighters would actually accept that?

Khabib has the same game plan for every fight anyway.

Takedown....Takedown....Takedown

Yeah, but you need to plan for your opponent. Doing that at this level is no joke, and the fact he's happy to switch up opponents three times in a week is insane.

MMA can't grow any further without stars and stars aren't going to get out of bed for the kind of money UFC pays its fighters. McGregor is their biggest ever star and he earnt three times in one night what he had fighting for the UFC. Why would he defend the title if he didn't need to? The only reason he has for fighting for the UFC again is to try and get out of his contract as soon as possible but with 3 or 4 fights to go is that even worth the risk?

'Stars' come & go. This isn't pro-wrestling where you can plan someone's trajectory & 'strap a rocket to them'. What the sport needs is consistency & clear champions & contenders. Everything else takes care of itself (in very broad terms).

I've continually said that it's fine making "money fights", but the titles need to remain pure, to an extent. This is what happens when you take the approach of a fake sport and apply it to a real sport.

The titles in legit sports can't be used as props to sell PPV's, it just can't happen. This is the result of doing that.

That is largely because of the UFC meat grinder though, it won't be like that forever. It's what makes it a great sport/company to follow but they are only going to get away with it for so long.

Well then he should've relinquished the title then. Nobody was saying he had to fight if he didn't want to. But he wanted to not fight AND still keep the title. If he decided after the Mayweather fight that he'd made enough money then fair play. But he wanted to sit out, not fight, yet still hold onto the title, occasionally dropping in to act like Tony Montana ran through an ink factory and thinking he's above the sport and the law. Bollocks to his star power it's gone beyond that. The man's a liability. He's nearly 30 years old with millions in the bank and a new baby at home. He should be sat in his mansion up to his elbows in shitty nappies and Farley's rusks. Not throwing shit at a bus full of people like a fucking teenage ASBO case.

In fairness, he's probably at that level of ability where, as long as he keeps himself fit, he doesn't need to plan all that much for his opponents - if he's unbeaten this many matches in, he probably figures he has a template for beating every kind of fighter with his style of fighting. And I'd imagine that, a bit like Rousey, he's also utilising the psychological advantage that being so dominant has most likely afforded him.

Yeah, but him and his team still have to prepare. We've seen top fighter simply refuse to take such steps so close to fights of this magnitude, and you can't blame them for it.

Why not just vacate then if he clearly has no intention of fighting again? He can talk as much shit as he likes about running the company and giving out about fighters pulling out but it's all just running his mouth without any sign of his words being backed up. The whole purpose of the fighting industry is to do just that. That's why he should be wanting to defend his title. It's never exactly been a secret to him that the UFC can't offer him anywhere near the money that he could make in a boxing ring, he needs to make his mind up in terms of what he wants to do.
