I've always loved that WWF aired this promo.

I would love to know the context. I'm imagining it's just some WWF exec catching Davey on his way into the arena and going "Cut a promo about being in the Royal Rumble." and he did that. Obviously, they went to him later on and said "Okay Davey, that was pretty funny but we need a proper promo" and he told them to fuck off.

Fuck Michael Cole. He described Punk as being now a 7 time World Champion despite him winning the big gold 3 times in 08 and 09, then the WWE title 3 times in 2011 before he left, as well as now 2 wins of the Silver Medal. Lazy prick.

They count the Summerslam unification as a continuation of the title reign from MITB rather than a separate reign. They’re still wrong about his World title wins as he’s a former ECW champion which, at the time he won it, they were calling a World title, which gives him 8 (2 WWE, 2 new WHC, 3 old WHC, 1 ECW), 11 if you add his ROH and AEW World title wins

Obvious bollocks. If beating Cena didn’t count as winning the title back but as continuation, then Rey and Cena never really won the title in the first place and thus Cena’s on 16, not 17. Can’t have it both ways. They didn’t and never have recognised the concept of “interim champion,” the title went Cena-Punk-Rey-Cena-Punk, the idea that Punks first reign was uninterrupted so Rey and Cena have reigns just floating detached from the main lineage makes no sense. Punk left, they stripped the title off him and crowned a new champion like several instances past and moved on. That he came back 8 days later is immaterial, he’s not the champion anymore. He brought a physical belt with him - so what? It’s HBK in 93 all over again, he wasn’t the champ and had he beaten Razor it would have been 3, not continuation of 2.

I can understand why they don’t count the JoMo/Ezekiel Jackson/Dreamer belt which was less prestigious than the European title, however, and it would be completely illogical for them to count anything Punk won in indies. That’s a slippery slope, soon we’d be recognising Graves as “a former World Champion” because he was once 1PW World Heavyweight Champion of Doncaster. WWE for most of the last couple of decades only (sometimes) recognise titles won outside their control if it was in WCW, which they own, or won by Ric Flair.

It was bollocks but I’m pretty sure in the promo Triple H cut when he interrupted Vince was that Cena and Punk were both champions so by that logic (or lack of) Punk’s reign was one continuous reign until Del Rio pinned him at Summerslam
