I think I might have to give up on the Tuesday Night Jaw podcast. I wasn't exactly buzzing for it to begin with but I've always been a big Scroobius Pip fan so was interested to listen to him talk wrestling in this forum. However, as well as the craic just being a bit dull and 2003ish (and way too drawn out), I think Jim Smallman is a really, really hard listen. I don't follow his promotion over here so apologies if I'm having a pop at a local deiety or something like that, but I can't get away with all the references to his own booking or his own standup when he's reviewing stuff. It's the type of thing that Jericho used to be an absolute nightmare for on his show before he drastically curbed it. His constant use of indy/jap/britwres references too, half of them fly over my head and they don't really make an effort to bring the listener in on them, so maybe it's partly because it's too niche for me.

 

Worst of all though, they just all sound like the exact people you'd end up stuck in a pub before a WWE show over here desperately hoping they don't talk to you. You know the sort. Which is the exact opposite reaction I have to John Pollock and Wai Ting, who I have no shame in admitting that I wish they were my mates in real life.

 

I've still got his interview with Regal downloaded to listen to, but the fact that it sounds like they might good friends anyway actually makes it worse, as it means he's more likely to project more of his actual personality than play the role of the interviewer.

Tried to listen to Bischoff's new pod but the lad he has presenting with him is an annoying voiced fucking idiot. Pity, cos Bischoff is always interesting.

 

Tuesday Night Jaw with Regal was fantastic I thought.

Oh no! I just stuck on the Nakamura edition of Talk Is Jericho and Jericho has went full on Joey Barton with his broken English and weird Matt Hardy pronunciations.

 

EDIT: Thankfully he calms it down a bit after 5/10 minutes. Let's blame the charisma.

He did indeed tone that down after the first five minutes, but to be fair I'm sure Jericho has spoken in the past about his experiences in Japan and how the western wrestlers often adopt that simplified broken English speech pattern when talking to the Japanese guys because it helps them to follow the conversation much more easily. I'd say it's not quite a Steve McClaren thing.

 

It's a decent interview, nothing you absolutely need to hear though. Tough to get great stories out of a guy that doesn't speak English too well I suppose. Nakamura does come across as cool as fuck though, he doesn't need to say a lot for you to feel that.

I'm only about half way through the nakamura one. liked the story about the tsuanmi making him consider what he want so do, and that helped him decide to move to states.

Yeah I get why he was doing it, but it was proper distracting listening to Jericho go all "Meek Mahan" heavy on some words. He seemed to catch himself as it went on and realised it was killing the podcast / Nakamura's understanding of English is decent.

 

Agree with your review. Decent enough. Very much just scrapes the surface or Nakamura's career, but when he does reveal some of his tricks and the whys, it's borderline fascinating.
