UKFF Hip Hop Thread

This popped up on a shuffle playlist and I forgot just how ignorant the lyrics are, and just had a proper chuckle over them.

I mean, Too Short is great and if you listen to (certain) hip hop, you have to make some exceptions and *Chris Rock voice* "let some shit sliiiide", but fucking hell.

Not for playing around little dunns:

Also, this came on as well and its brilliant storytelling.

Biggie: I Got A Story To Tell is really worth a watch if you have any interest in the subject. Some of it is the same well worn narrative (not as much as you'd expect), but there's enough unseen footage and stories to make it worth your time.

Easy Mo Bee seems like the nicest guy too. I'd like to have a coffee with him.

New music wise, I've enjoyed the Drakeo The Ruler album, The Truth Hurts. It's quite oppressive at times, but it has enough about it to go back to. Features a Drake song that I didn't completely hate as well.

Really enjoyed the Denzel Curry & Kenny Beats-Unlocked 1.5 album, which is just Unlocked but remixes.

Again, like all remixes, I am only a fan if they do something new with it. I have little time for 'remixes' that just chuck a load of rappers on the original beat, so this is great.

And this is the standout, adding a bit of a breakbeat/jungle vibe to it, which works really well.

The whole thing is good shit and only 20 minutes, so good for a little run I've found.

And finally, this is just amazing. Have played it so much this week, I'm now strolling everywhere with a crip walk.

Anyone else heard anything good recently?

The most recent RA The Rugged Man album, All my heroes are dead, is really good. I've never been his biggest fan, either.

that planet Asia / musalini album is good.

Not recent but new to me - blueprint - respect the architect.- really interesting production and very good lyrically.

Felt 4 - predictably good, will get plenty more rotation. I think 2 is still my favourite though for now.

I love that album, and have always rated Blueprint. Think this is where I first heard him, and think he absolutely kills it. Produced it as well.

And I know you're not much of a podcast fan, but his Super Duty Tough Work pod is really great. Very different and he is really open about the industry, what a struggle it is etc. The episode on DOOMs marketing was excellent. Check it out*

*You won't.

I've listened to that Rugged Man album so much over this past year, it's so strong from start to finish. If you guys have any recommendations for any other current rappers still repping that old school style I'd be grateful.

Assume I am preaching to the choir here, but I've found the Twitter account and website Hip Hop Golden Age to be an absolute gold mine for recommendations for stuff to keep my ears busy whilst working from home.

Good website that. I really like this dude too: https://twitter.com/PaulDJStepOne?s=20 (Appears like this as it tried to link every single one of his tweets otherwise)

His website has for years been a superb resource and he's started doing DJ's top mixtapes, and as someone who loves mixtapes, it's been a great help to just whack on something in the background with a mixture of styles.

http://djstepone.blogspot.com/

DJ Spinbad-Rock The Casbah is even on there, which is one of the greatest mixtapes of all time. (No one asked but my top 3 would be DJ Yoda & DJ Greenpeace-Jews Paid, Killa Kela & Mr Thing-Antistatic Mouthwash and Roc Raida-What! 187FM)

As for rappers in the vein of RA, you could do worse than the last Ill Bill album. https://illbill.bandcamp.com/album/la-bella-medusa

Thought it was really good, and I've always rated him as a rapper.

If you haven't heard it I reckon you might like Celph Titled - nineteen ninety now.

And secondly, may be stupidly obvious as he features on the album - but have you had a listen to AFRO? He's pretty nice even if he is totally biting Gift of Gab's flow.

For recent-ish stuff I’ve been listening to Ransom a fair bit lately;

And I’ve mentioned him a few times in this thread but 38 Spesh is one of my favourites at the moment. Rapping and producing. This track with Eto is a standout for me. 38 is on the second verse...

His joint albums with Kool G Rap (Son Of G Rap) and Benny The Butcher (Stabbed & Shot) are ace as well.

I’d also recommend checking out Stove God Cooks, Jay Royale, RJ Payne, Thorough, Ty Farris, Che Noir and The Opioid Era. I know I’m forgetting a bunch as well.

Watch this as well. I mentioned him above but he might get lost in the shuffle, RJ Payne recently put this out, ‘Murder In Less Than 60 Seconds’. Skip the first minute of Lord Jamar waffling. It’s just 26 minutes of him sitting in a car firing off lyrics over old beats. I love this.

His other stuff is worth a listen as well but this is just a snippet of him. That reminds me, I think there’s a Part 2 to this actually that I haven’t got around to yet.

Just had a read through of this with a coffee, and it is well worth your time. https://www.passionweiss.com/2021/03/09/biggie-smalls-rankings/

They've ranked every song, and there's some excellent write ups. Personally I'd have Who Shot Ya? as my number one as it's a fucking cracker, and it's really menacing but it's all subjective. It's also one of my favourite samples from this, which has been used a stupid amount of times. (5:00 in is the Who Shot Ya? sample)

Also need to flag these up as I was looking for an album and came across some incredible album covers that I've never seen and a couple I'd forgot about.

and the best one of all and probably the greatest album cover of all time:

Amazing. I'd definitely buy a coffee book of 'bad' hip hop album covers.

No new music to report on but this just came on the radio and I was reminded how excellent Little Simz is:

JME, Shorty, Frisco and Capo Lee have joined up for this mini album Norf Face and it is wicked. I am a massive JME fan and this is just a great little EP that showcases how strong 'traditional grime' (if thats a thing) is.

This throwback was my stand out.

I also watched this the other day and it was so interesting. I never Miles Davis made a 'hip hop' album.

Not something new, but I thought it might be of interest.

I represent a lot of dancers, many of whom specialise in hip-hop, K.R.U.M.P., popping, locking, and anything else you might find on a dance battle circuit. The older of my younger sisters is one of them, and several years ago, she was in a street-dance troupe called Boadicea who got on Got 2 Dance and did quite well. They did a dance video in 2012 for a track by producer Mikey J, which helped raise the troupe's profile, featuring several women MCs.

What I didn't know was that Lady Leshurr was on it! Also some other names you guys would be more familiar with: Amplify Dot, Baby Blue, Lioness, RoxXxan, and Mz Bratt. Anyway, here's the dance video:

and here's the original music video:
