Random thoughts thread v2 *NO NEWS ITEMS*

In regards to the commentary, we have been spoiled in the past.

Monsoons knack at making even the silliest angles seem important and real.

Heenans comedy.

JR's passion and intensity.

Vince's over the top selling

Ventura's knack of being able to play off anyone.

Even Lawler in the late nineties was far more interesting character than the shell we have now.

Problem is the current team have been around so long. Lawler has been a commentator on and off for about 20 years. Cole around 15 years. Its mad when you think that JR was there for less than 10.

Monsoon was a shocking announcer.

Behave you tart. Monsoon was brilliant. Yeah, in hindsight there was a lot of bluster and bullshit, but he made you believe what you were watching and he enhanced big matches. He had incredible chemistry with Jesse and Heenan which even made shit squash matches entertaining. Monsoon was a seller.

So, all I could think about during the Brock/Cena match at Summerslam, aside from how brilliant and one sided it was, was how skinny Brock's legs are looking.

Turns out I'm not the only one:

He wasn't a seller at all. He spent half of his time burying everything, you Norman. Constantly going on about how people will never get a submission or making people look stupid by going on about how they didn't hook the leg (when WWF house style is that you only hook the leg on the finish) and all that kind of shite.

He was funny with Heenan, but he wasn't a good announcer.

But that kind of shite got you invested in the match. Like when he would berate the referee or talk about limbs you didn't know existed. It added to the feeling that what you were watching was real and what he was delivering was an analysis. It was utterly perfect for that era of the WWF.

Not having any of this Monsoon besmirchment; he was great, and ideal for the time!

And a small part of that was for some of the reasons why Butch thinks he was shite. The hooking the leg comments were a great touch, which often put over how cocky the heel was, and gave the belief that all these mid-match nearfalls could be legit if only they did hook the leg.

Likewise with the acknowledging that rest holds weren't going to force a submission. Nobody ever believed they would've anyway, but Gorilla always made sure to emphasise the wearing-down effect they had, which gave them a purpose in the story of the match, and made the fans cheer for the babyface to get out of it sooner rather than later.
