I fell in love with a Video Nasty

I came across this today while, inspired by this thread, reading about the Video Nasty hysteria that The Great British Press engaged in.

On the website below you can download a zip file (which is 851.225 mb) featuring scans of newspaper stories on Video Nasties. The articles span the period 1980-2008.

The chap who took the time to compile this should be commended, and I don't know his name but whoever he is I salute him. It is a wonderful collection featuring the British media descending into trademark tabloid absurdity, and viewed with distance some of this shit is truly absurd.

I have tried to make a conscious choice to view it all as an amusing distraction. You could get enraged by if you let yourself. The sheer idea of the right wing press trying to decide what is fit for us to view. That could upset a chap. Then there's the very disquieting way the media cover horrific things like the Bulger murder. For instance, there's a headline in The Sun in November 1993 that reads For the Sake of All Our Kids Burn Your Video Nasty and which tops a story about The Sun's campaign to get all copies of Child's Play 3 burned. At the very best, that's hugely fucking crass. Starting a gimmick campaign after a child is murdered by other two children...

It's also depressingly familiar. The Daily Mail and co are still doing this today. The video nasty issue might not be in vogue but oversimplification of complex issues and a cavalier disregard for the truth to tow an editorial line are hardly relics of the past.

Thank the universe for the internet, at least these days we don't have to get all our information from publications that assume we're simpletons.

Anyway, sorry for the boring rant. Download the archive and enjoy things like a 1995 Daily Mail story entitled Age of the Zombie which begins...

...The destructive side-effects on children of computer games and violent videos were spelled out yesterday.

Many computer games could become as addictive as hard drugs, turning some young users into anti-social zombies, said a psychology expert...

The same article also features a sidebar which helpfully points out ways to spot a young addict.

Archive is available at the link below...

Didn't it turn out that the Bulger murderers didn't even watch "Child's Play 3"? Only two similarities were ever found between the film and the murder and that was a bit where the kid gets red paint stuck on him and another where he was tied to a railway line. They were obsessed with another horror film that I can't seem to remember the name of. ADDED: It might have been "Mikey". Still banned over here.

"Child Play 3" is really shit too.

A similar situation played out following Columbine where the media started pointing the finger at Marilyn Manson even though I don't think there was every any real evidence that the killers even listened to his music. The Matrix was also a target I believe.

Just goes to show that nothing has changed at all since the Video Nasty Era other than the media and technology getting the blame.

I'd never heard of 'Mikey' until I read this. Just looked it up on Wikipedia, sounds fucked up. It's on Youtube so I'll give it a watch at some point.

You little fuckers have no idea about how difficult life was in the Video Nasty period. Swapping hard earned Star Wars toys for ropey 5th generation copies of Cannibal Ferox, and porn? It was a hunt, a hunt I tell you. Once you found dad's stash on the top of the wardrobe/attic/shed ect, the wait for them to piss off out so you could watch the scrambled humping was soul destroying.

Not watching that, ta, I know what that fucking is!

Did anyone mention on here the fact that they released a follow-up to the brilliant documentary Ian mentioned in his opening post?

It's even better as well. Fantastic documentary.

ORDERED.

Currently making my way through disk 2 of the first set again and I never thought that sitting through a bunch of trailers with intros could be so entertaining.
