I fell in love with a Video Nasty

Its absolutely insane. Didn't think they'd find a version of it to stick on TV. Was the lamb raping scene in there? That's when I gave up on my DVD version of it. Just goes from one extreme scene to another, then it goes all wacky at the end with the crazy farmer guy.

I'm pretty sure it's been passed uncut in this country now so in theory they could show the full thing on telly. Would be surprised if it didn't get quite a few complaints even with it being hidden away on the the horror channel.

Yes, the lamb rape scene was there. What made me laugh was the fact that the bloke's missus didn't fancy having sex that morning so he finds the nearest thing, which happens to be an innocent animal. Absolutely mental! He stabs the poor thing to death after he's finished as well.

The soundtrack is pretty good as well, I thought. The film was pretty well made considering the budget. Acting was poor in places but I'm not really bothered.

"Caligula" is a decent film, if you manage to snag the 90 minute version. Don't think I'd be rushing to get the three hour cut. As Mark Kermode said, definately a great film in there. It's just the porn scenes inserted into the film (oo-er) that ruin it big-time.

Island of Death was passed uncut and got released by Arrow a while ago. Still completely insane that you can just walk into HMV and buy a copy of a film where a guy is nailed to a floor and force fed paint while someone has it off with a goat while the Peppa Pig DVD's are a few aisles away.

I was lucky enough to be given a VHS of it by my mate a few years back on the same tape as Wild Zero and Master Of The Flying Guillotine with a bunch of trailers from the old Night Of The Bloody Apes DVD at the end.

Caligula is a quality film! I think the longer version is better. I've seen the edited version and it's an absolute travesty that the 'wedding' scene was cut. That scene illustrated what an absolute bastard Caligula was. In the cut version it ended when he touched the woman's bum. Malcolm McDowell is just superb in this film. I agree that the porn shots were a bit excessive.

Caligula is magic - I'm not sure if I have a copy at the moment, but there was a special feeling to watching a 4th-gen bootleg of the uncut version - made everything seem even muckier. McDowell is exceptional. I almost went to Aber University because they had a cult video store that had a dodgy copy of Caligula.

I remember watching an uncut version of "Cannibal Ferox" one time unfortunately. So much animal cruelty that it makes you feel physically sick at the end, probably more harsher that "Cannibal Holocaust".

Scene where a raccoon type animal gets absolutely crushed to death (then it bloody ate it. Urgh) by a big anaconda like snake stayed with me for days. Wasn't the actual video of it (I had my eyes closed!) it was the sound of it. Stayed with me for bloody weeks. No need for that type of scene either. I read that the Japanese loved that shit in the 70s.

I've said it before in another thread when some kangaroo butchering Aussie film was being talked about, but I think the brief trend in the 70s in slightly dodgy horror films for using real onscreen animal cruelty and killing as cheap gore in lieu of special effects is one of the most shameful things in film, there's no place for that shit whatsoever. Cannibal Holocaust is a decent film but the shock value of killing a huge turtle on screen (among a few other things) is just desperate and dirty, and not in a good way.

I dunno if it counts a video nasty or not by whatever criteria but for a giggle I recommend Umberto Lenzi's Nightmare City [1980] it's a zombie/vampire one that's got running Zombies before even Return of the Living Dead even and to top it off they look like they have dogshit on the faces for make-up, it's my favourite bad movie ever!

Nightmare City [1980]

just give the trailer a look and tell me you're not ever so slightly intrigued.

Have to agree with Billy Scuts up there, I find Caligula to a wonderful flick.

The only gripe I have with it, is that there was nowhere near enough of Mirren in the raw. Considering the subject matter, and her seeming insistence on going nude in everything she does, I was disappointed. But I did actually enjoy the flick, on the whole.

I remember a big furore over Blood Rites, but that wasn't bad at all, really. That always stuck in my head as being somewhat tame for what's deemed an oul' nasty.

  • 2 weeks later...

Last year I did a wedding video for my friend and a few weeks ago I decided to try and make a Video Nasty style, grindhouse trailer using the footage I shot. I showed him the edit today and he approved, so it's online now. If you have 2 minutes, please check it out. Had to borrow a bit of footage here and there, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out...

"The Wedding"

I watched a bucket load of old trailers for films like Halloween, The Ambulance and The Burning as well as the earlier 70s horror/exploitation stuff. I really wished I had planned this before I filmed their wedding, as I would blatantly have nailed some extra shots just to use in the horror trailer.

That was pretty awesome! Did it take you long to edit together?

Thanks man. It took quite a while but I love doing stuff like this so I wasn't really noting the time. The sound layering took the most time, as well as getting the grainy, scratched, jittery look right.

Right, I've just watched the main documentary on the Video Nasties Definitive Guide part 2 DVD, which I pre-ordered from amazon and arrived this morning. Entitled 'Draconian Days', and directed by Jake West, who did the original documentary, this was superb viewing. A Lot of it focuses on the renewed hysteria of 'video nasties' after the James Bulger murder when certain people tried to blame Child's Play 3. You get to see the ridiculous headlines in papers like The Sun like 'Did This Video Kill James Bulger' and other similar nonsense, as well as someone's home being raided by the police for being thought to be in possession of such videos. It really is an amazing watch.

Also, as in the previous set you get the trailers and reviews for various films on discs 2 and 3. This includes the 82 titles on the DPP's 'Section 3' list. There are some well known titles such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Deep Red, The Thing, Suspiria and Friday the 13th as well as some lesser known gems like Brutes and Savages, Oasis of the Zombies and erm Schoolgirls in Chains.

Overall, another excellent set and I would recommend that anyone with an interest check it out.
