Paid Members Your Fight Site Posted August 24, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted August 24, 2015 Hey everyone, bit of a bump here but looking for some advice. I've recently started wanting to get into Batman comics. The only comic I've ever read is The Walking Dead, but having recently ploughed through Arkham Asylum, Arkham City and now playing Arkham Knight, I've wanted to go and read a bit more about these characters. Â I've heard stuff like "The Killing Joke" and "Long Halloween" are great reading. What would be a good jumping off point for a new reader? I don't really want to go all the way back to 1939 and start from issue one, unless I really have to. Â Also, if someone could explain how the comics work, are they all one big continuation since issue one? Or have they been rebooted several times since then? Â Thanks for any advice. The whole DC Universe was rebooted just a couple of years ago in what is referred to as The New 52 but yes, there were various character-specific reboots before then. Â The story arcs from Batman have been collected in graphic novels. Have a look for Court of Owls and Death in the Family.
Paid Members Carbomb Posted August 24, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted August 24, 2015 The standard Batman arcs to start with are The Dark Knight Returns, Year One and The Killing Joke, I think.
sammorgz
Recommend you taking a look at these threads and this forum in general if you haven't found it already. Paid Members Bellenda Carlisle Posted August 25, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted August 25, 2015 Â Venom is one of my all time favourite Batman stories, give that one a go too.
Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted August 25, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted August 25, 2015 Just got Joker/Mask and it's really quite poor. Putting the two of them together should have been a riot and in the right writers hands, it would have been, but what a fucking let down. And at 30 quid too! WyattSheepMask
People have already mentioned about Dark Knight Returns and Year One so I'll leave those but Excellent shout by Bellend with Venom, a great book. Â Earth One - is a good reimaging of the origin story The Black Mirror - written by Scott Snyder who has taken the bulk of the Batman writing since the New52 relaunch Knightfall is an epic story arc and serves as the introduction of Bane into the Batman universe The Long Halloween is a great story as is it's follow up Dark Victory If you like the games, there is an Arkham City book by Paul Dini (who wrote on the Batman Animated Series in the 90s) which bridges the gap between the Asylum and City games and actually a pretty good read in it's own right. Â Â Does anyone know when the new Frank Miller Dark Knight III arc is to hit the shops? Edited August 25, 2015 by WyattSheepMask
Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted August 25, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted August 25, 2015 Does anyone know when the new Frank Miller Dark Knight III arc is to hit the shops? Â This autumn apparently. Not sure of a date, but on the teaser poster it said "Fall 2015"
WyattSheepMask
Yeah that's what I saw but that encompasses I good chunk of time. I'll ask the guy at my local shop next time I go
Paid Members Your Fight Site Posted August 25, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted August 25, 2015 Knightfall and Bane are my favourite Batman story arc and villain. I remember taking the first book into school (as you could take a book in, in case play time was rained out) and some one stole it out of my drawer
Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted August 25, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted August 25, 2015 I must be the only cunt on the planet who hated Knightfall and the only cunt on the planet who loved Cacaphony.
WyattSheepMask
Knight fall is a hell of a slog to get through. Cacophony was one by Kevin Smith wasn't it, with the art done by his mate who works in his comic shop and is a prize bellend
Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted August 25, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted August 25, 2015 That's him. The "Tell him, Steve Dave!" guy, who drools and laughs through his nose. I just quite liked the Kevin Smith humour in Cacaphony. Smith briefly touched on reading more Deadpool as he "may or may not" have been tapped to pen a Deadpool arc, so I'd look forward - or not - to that. Yeah, I fucking hated Knightfall. Some nice imagery that stays with you, but it was horrendously boring on the whole. I only gave it one chance, so maybe I should try give it another belt, but unless I leave the novel in the room where I shite, then I can't see myself ever opening it again. Paid Members chokeout Posted August 25, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted August 25, 2015 Knightfall has some good moments and needs to be read for its place in Batman history but it intentionally went for epic and feels really bloated because of it. Paid Members Bellenda Carlisle Posted August 25, 2015 Paid Members Share Posted August 25, 2015 Cacophony is abysmal dawg. Â Knightfall is ok but I really hate 90s comics for the most part and it's very 90s. Â Don't read any comics where someone other than Bruce Wayne is Batman, they're all shit and it's a terrible idea.
