I've read Preacher so many times I think I'd rather see a TV show that departs from the comic books. The idea is so good that I think there are multiple avenues a TV show of it could explore without being just an issue-by-issue adaption. As long as it gets the characters right and includes the big moments (like God biting out Jesse's eyeball for example) then I'd be happy. I love the Sex Detectives as much as anybody but I think some of that stuff wouldn't really translate to TV no matter what channel it was on.

Like how HBO are doing Game Of Thrones now...it's the same basic plot as the books but they are just getting there in a different way with completely different scenes yet still including all the big major moments. I'd much prefer that.

Not on AMC is how. The network that allowed Breaking Bad a single bleeped 'fuck' a season.

Thats an FCC ruling, not AMC's choice. If they were to have more uses of the word 'fuck' they then fall into a different set of guidelines that mean they would become a subscription style chanell like HBO. And then chances are that Breaking bad would have disappeared after a couple of seasons rather than being the fucking awesome piece of television that it is

America has some fucked up censorship rules. When I was there is Feb they showed Beverly Hills Cop at 2 in the afternoon with all the violence still in but cut out the swearing, the sort of weird edit you'd get on ITV about 20 years ago

I've only just seen this thread with the Preacher news! Is it actually happening now, not just wet talk like the last seven announcements of it? Very exciting if it becomes a reality. The TV landscape is more ready for it now than it's ever been, but is "God's a cunt" too much for even the people who followed Walter White's downward spiral?

I'll be upset if they make a pilot then nothing more. Even if it turns up online. How far did any of the previous attempts ever get, just the Arseface makeup test?

My thoughts on the film categories, for what they're worth (not a lot):

<-- click on 'spoiler' to show/hide the spoiler

American Hustle being in there so much irritates me a little bit. I'm sure it's very good and everything but at this stage it seems a little bit like studios only give David O Russell money to make films so they can bag loads of nominations in awards season. That's his last three - this, Silver Linings and The Fighter - that have dominated most of the acting categories in the past four years. And you never hear about any of them before the Awards Buzz starts. Anyway, moving on...

The Motion Picture - Drama category looks really strong this year. I haven't seen Philomena, and 12 Years A Slave isn't out here yet, but I'd be happy with any of those winning. Obligatory 'David O Russell's made a film, NOMINATIONS AHOY' aside, I feel the same about Director. Cuaron and Greengrass both did great things this year, and McQueen and Payne are worthy winners too.

Best Actress - Drama is very strong indeed this year too. I'd have considered Blanchett a lock for it, but Emma Thompson is superb in Saving Mr Banks, and Bullock does a hell of a lot with Gravity. You can't ever discount the Dench, either. Winslet seems a bit tacked-on, like they ran out of people, spotted she'd made a film and assumed she was good enough in it to warrant a nom.

Nice to see McConaughey get nominated, he's been in loads of good stuff this year, but the Actor - Drama category is going to Redford, Hanks or Ejiofor. Ejiofor's got the buzz at the moment, it seems, but I'd be perfectly happy seeing Hanks win just for the final scene of Captain Philips. He's astonishing there. I'd have to assume Bruce Dern will take Idris Elba's place in the Actor category come Oscar time, but I don't know, maybe Mandela's death will affect how people see Elba's performance. DiCaprio might get a nod ahead of McConaughey, too.

I'd imagine Sally Hawkins has Supporting Actress sewn up, but knowing recent history, American Hustle will get 3/4 of the acting awards because it exists. (I'm sure it's very good, I'm sure it is, but it irrationally annoys me. It means nothing to me who gets nominated for film awards! It really doesn't. But it annoys me.)

Some really nice surprises in Supporting Actor - based on what people are saying, you can't look beyond Fassbender, but Barkhad Abdi was excellent in Captain Phillips (can't see him winning, mind) and it's brilliant to see Daniel Bruhl in there for Rush.
