This one happened in a slightly mad way - JAPW booked Joe & Dan Maff vs. Vader & Mike Awesome in 2004; I remember it being pretty good at the time.

looking back on it JAPW had some absolutely insane line ups, I think pre PWG taking off they were the fed that most went with the idea of a super indy in terms of match ups. Even just reading the cards was brilliant trying to imagine what the fuck any of them were like, but I had to keep imagining because I seem to remember no traders really had any JAPW. There's an absolutely demented Low Ki vs Necro Butcher match from them that takes place in a school hall full of Christmas decorations.

Sting vs Warrior - I know we got them as a team during Crazy Jim’s shambolic run in WCW but they could easily play off their early history and have Warrior’s promos tap into a more darker, heelish style like the ‘crash the plane’ one he cut on Hogan in the run up to WM6

Ok great but the thread is "past vs present" not "past vs past".

Eddie Kingston against any of the ECW legends would be good but I think he'd make magic with Steve Corino. Imagine the promos! And Yoshihiro Tajiri vs Kenny Omega would tear the house down.

Jerry Lawler vs MJF would be one of the most fun matches I can imagine. Molten crowd heat for that one.

I'd actually be quite intrigued by a Kingston vs. Taz feud - the promos would be the most "Noo Yo-uck" ever. Two violent fuckers fighting over who's from the tougher neighbourhood.

Picture the scene…CM Punk and Kevin Owens are in the ring doing a SHOOT PROMO and dropping real names (gasp!) about how PHIL still owes him money from a ROH show in 2004 when out come THE MASTERS OF THE POWERBOMB, Sid Vicious and Big Van Vader and destroy these middle-aged geeks.

Rina Yamashita vs Megumi Kudo

A pretty obvious one for the deathmatch fans, the original queen of barbed wire vs the current. I'd be really surprised if Rina isn't on the special 40th Anniversary card that Megumi Kudo is putting on. I think Rina would have to wrestle heel, I just can't imagine Megumi being anything other than a beloved babyface. I'd have to go old school exploding barbed wire, none of the light tubes or more modern tricks allowed.

Serious answer has to be Bret Hart vs Bryan Danielson. It's not just "they are both great" or "they are both similar", but I think they'd each bring the best out of the other. Bret brings the timeless "this is how I tell a story, this is how I adapt it to this specific opponent" and Danielson brings the "I have learned from a wide range of places and styles and bring it all together". Bret brings the recipe and technique and Danielson brings the fresh ingredients.

More "it could either work or be a bloody disaster" would be Mark Rocco vs Jon Moxley (it looks like a fight because it kind of is), Johnny Saint vs YOSHIHIKO (Saint was capable of working a match against an opponent who he could literally tell to "stay still and don't let go", so if he understood the visual element and the limitations/tricks, it could work) and Les Kellett vs Invisible Man with Bryce Remsburg reffing.

Not to bring the mood down too much, and I don’t even have specific opponents for them, but whenever this type of topic comes up I always think of lads like Larry Sweeney and Chris Kanyon. It speaks to how healthier and frankly nicer pro-wrestling is nowadays that had both guys came along fifteen or twenty years later, I assume/hope they’d both be tearing it up on AEW television.

On topic, I’d pay top dollar to watch Bryan Danielson vs. Psycho Sid or Bryan Danielson vs. The Great Khali.

I'd love to see Owen Hart vs AJ Styles, Will Ospreay and Kenny Omega. Not all at the same time, but that'd be fine as well.

They'd just be furiously fast and hard hitting, which is my cup of tea of wrestling.

If Bret vs Danielson ever happened, half of this forum wouldn't be able to walk for a week.

MJF vs 03/04 Eddie Guerrero - the match would obviously be great, but for me, it’s the interactions they’d have that would make me want to see this. You have the entitled, rich kid and someone who had to overcome adversity and addiction to get to the top. They could have had a fantastic feud.

MJF vs Kurt Angle - again, it’s the combination of the promos and matches. There are similarities between their characters, and I imagine they’d tear the house down when it came to the actual match.

The Undertaker (04-08) vs Brody King - I’m a sucker for a good big man match and this is almost certainly what this would be. I almost went for the more left-field choice of JBL vs Brody King but changed my mind because…

JBL vs Eddie Kingston - I’m not completely confident that this match would be good, but if they both brought their A-game, they’d beat the shit out of one another in a very satisfying way. In addition to that, the contrast between their characters would lead to a very enjoyable feud.

Steve Austin vs Hangman Page - never mind the Punk match, this is the obvious dream match for me. You have two very different versions of the same character - an everyman, a top babyface but two very different interpretations of what that should be, for the era in which they existed. And with that in mind…

Steve Austin vs Swerve Strickland - If I’m suggesting there are overlooked similarities between Austin and Page, it stands to reason I’d want to see Hangman’s ultimate rival take on his 90s equivalent. I can only imagine how incredible the mic work would be, and how brutal the subsequent match would play out.
