Austin/HHH goes on for forever. 2001-2003 is filled with cards stacked with Hall of Fame talent that just put on absolute duds. It was a very weird time. Quote
Ro_y Disco Posted February 25 Posted February 25 The Hardcore title match is fun - lots of run ins and title changes, as was standard in the era. I remember reading about the show in Power Slam a long time before I actually watched any of it and the photos of that match made it seem like the most mad thing ever. I really like the Three Stages of Hell match, although I've mainly watched the shortened version from the Best of 2001 RAW episode that was subsequently released on DVD, which might have helped. My mate David had recorded No Way Out on Sky Sports and watched it on the Monday then lent me the tape, so I was able to go home and spend my Tuesday afternoon watching it. I remember wanting X-Pac to win the IC title, and being completely unfussed about Stone Cold vs Triple H. I watched the main event again a few years ago during my “watch every Kurt Angle PPV match” thread; this might be the one that features an all-time terrible Earl Hebner performance where he’s actively detracting from the quality of the match around him. I remember the IC title 4 Way being really good as well but depends whether you fancy watching the murderer. Angle vs Rock was great, they always had good chemistry. But my main memory of that particular match is Kurt screaming “I’LL BREAK YOUR FUCKING ANKLE” while he’s got Rock in the ankle lock and it’s crystal clear audible and loud on the live broadcast. Austin vs Triple H is a right slog. Was there ever a great Three Stages Of Hell match? The Shawn vs Triple H one at Armageddon 2002 was a proper drag as well. Struggling to even recall what other ones there were now. Quote

Chili Posted February 26 Posted February 26 Backlash 2001 would have been extremely interesting had we got the HBK return that was planned around X7. They must have been eyeing up HHH/Michaels against Taker/Kane and it has a fair chance of being better than that Saudi disaster. Yeah for me it's remembered for Raven Vs Rhyno. A grand WWF hardcore match. I think they absolutely had something in Raven there as a face, but of course they did fuck all. Obviously the shopping trolley spot is visually brilliant, but I really loved Raven after just bashing the hell out of the cart with the kitchen sink. It made a fantastic racket. Match still holds up. Quote

SaitoRyo Posted February 26 Posted February 26 From what I remember reading about at the time, that post-WrestleMania X-Seven period is when Paul Heyman started to have a lot more influence on the booking/creative direction. He was particularly fond of Benoit, Angle and Jericho, which is why you got stuff like that Ultimate Submission Match, the Benoit/Jericho run as tag champs and the King of the Ring main event with them challenging Austin for the title in a triple threat. Backlash 2001 isn't a great PPV, but I'd rather watch it than most of the stuff they've put out over the past ten-to-fifteen years tbh. That period has a lot of nostalgia for me as late '99 to 2006 were probably my peak years of fandom (at least with WWE). No Way Out 2001 was really good though, in my opinion. Fun hardcore bullshit opener, really strong four-way for the IC, that shockingly good Trish/Steph match, Austin/HHH Three Stages of Hell and Rock/Angle in a very good main event. Only real weak spot is the Lawler/Richards match, while the three-team table match wasn't exactly memorable (outside of Undertaker's gear horror show that is). Quote
