The biggest/best lie you told that was believed

We just got a new car through a salary sacrifice thing at my work and having not been in a new car for almost a decade, we were someone taken back but how much cool stuff it had on it.

The funkiest thing so far is the 360 parking camera which uses cameras all around the car to generate a full overhead shot of the car in realtime so you can accurately back into spaces etc.

I had to pick up my mate’s wife the other day and she noticed with amazement the top-down view when I backed onto her driveway.

”How does that work?!?” she asked with excitement and my brain wasn’t as fast as my mouth, and so I explained how a little drone pops out of the roof every time you reverse so you can see where you’re going. She totally bought it and I’ve since had 2 other neighbours tell me they’ve heard about our amazing drone car.

This comes just a few days after my best mate reminded me when we were 9 years old and I told him The Undertaker had his nerves removed which explained why he seemingly didn’t feel pain.

What have you told someone, either as a joke or as a necessity that amazingly stuck and became the truth?

About 15 years back, someone at work told me with a completely straight face that their Brother went to school with The Undertaker.

Bloke was from South Wales. Brilliantly absurd.

To this day I'm not fully convinced it was a lie, but can't confirm it was truth either.

Maisie Williams at the height of Game of Thrones fame we're pretty sure we'd seen having driving lessons in Bath (she lived nearby and was in the clubs a lot) and with a group of mates I was nearly knocked down by a learner driver in Bath on a random afternoon.

Looked familiar, but couldn't confirm, but one comment to one person ended up a few hours later with a large amount of uni friends messaging me to ask if Maisie Williams had nearly hit me with a car.

Just ran with it.

Before I can remember any that were believed (plenty of BS and wind ups in my time) I’ll tell you the stupidest lie I told that I thought people would believe. 10 years old in 2001, told my friends who were into wrestling that I had bought ECW. And that I was letting Stephanie McMahon run things as I couldn’t get over there for the invasion. I appointed three of them into big roles in the company. I even made them certificates with their names and job titles. I still cringe thinking about it and wonder what the fuck I was thinking. Every now and then one of the three will say “remember when you owned ECW” and I'm quick to change the subject.

And in Paul Heyman fashion, I still owe them all money.

There's a mate of mine despite me being a white welsh male who thinks I'm Jamaican.

I told him that when my mother was pregnant with me, she gave birth to me on a plane over Jamaican waters making me officially Jamaican. He's never asked or realised I think that women can't fly when pregnant.

I'm sure it was, with some quite horrific details too, if memory serves!

“Had a chat with a girl I worked with a couple of years ago about quorn.  She loved it as it was a wonderful substitute for meat.  I explained to her it was still meat, and the quorn is a genetically bred brainless animal that comprises of a round body, no legs, no eyes or ears, just a mouth and an anus.  They are grown for 2 years, at which time they are euthanised by inserting a finger into both the mouth and the anus at the same time, suffocating it.  In despair, she contacted PETA.  This was the same girl I had the haggis discussion with.  Bless.”

Absolutely wonderful.

Two:

1. I was driving some members of my family somewhere and we passed a farmer's field, which prompted my gran to remark "Those cows are all black!".

Me: "Yeah, they're a special breed flown in from Jamaica."

Gran: "Are they really? ... (penny drops) ... You stupid bugger!"

2. My nan and grandpa had some ornamental rifles and pistols over the fireplace in their bungalow, which he would tell me that he used in the war to shoot the Germans with. Bear in mind he was born in the late twenties, so would've been too young to serve in the war, but I believed it and when I brought friends over I would get him to tell them too, much to his embarrassment, so they had to clue me up that he didn't start work until the mid-forties as a coal miner in South Wales, so I revised it knowingly to him having hit them all over the head with his shovel.

I live near Welford Park (where Bake Off is filmed) and you can pay to walk round the grounds to see the snowdrops amongst other flowers. There’s a big sign on one of the main roads nearby that says “WELFORD SNOWDROPS” with an arrow pointing to the park

When I first met my wife we drove past and I told her that the Welford Snowdrops were a basketball team me and my mate watch. She believed it for ages. I even had evenings out where she thought I was watching the Snowdrops play basketball. My mate was in on it too, we were close to getting some hats printed but never bothered in the end. Unfortunately the game was up when her family took her to see the actual snowdrops a few years ago

My birthday is in the second half of the year, and when I was in primary school, that meant it came after that of all of my friends.

When I was seven, I found some blank birthday party invites kicking around my house, so I decided to switch the process up and give birthday party invites to my pals a little bit early…around six months early.

Some of the parents knew it wasn’t my birthday, but some did not and that meant a decent number my friends came down to my house armed with presents.

I had to hide this from my mum, so I mixed orange juice with porridge and poured it all over the floor of my sister’s bedroom and told her she’d been sick. Amazingly, I managed to get my friends in, and I rushed the presents down to my room.

We went outside to play and I made up birthday games. Unfortunately, what I hadn’t banked on was that the parents would all turn up at different times to pick up the kids, and eventually one mum asked her son ‘how was the party?’ and my mum figured out what was going on and ratted me out.

She did not know about the presents though, and the parents must have felt too awkward to ask for them back…so I kept them. I feel bad about it now, but at the time I was pretty chuffed!

Circa 1985, a kid in my class would convincingly state that famed British wrestler Big Daddy was his grandfather which I believed.

In retrospect the fact that the kid was Pakistani should have been a clue that his story wasn’t quite on the level.

Funnily enough, I did go to school with someone who was related to Big Daddy, but it was the 90s and none of us had ever heard of him. When one kid who watched WWF wrestling, said there wasn’t a wrestler called Big Daddy and he was making it up, we all thought that.

The kid then told the teacher, who knew his family (I lived in a small area) and she confirmed to the whole class that it was true. The boy was very smug, the other kid said ‘well I’ve never heard of him so he must be rubbish’ and the narrative transformed into the kid being related to a crap wrestler instead. Poor guy just couldn’t catch a break.
