sammorgz Posted June 16, 2025 Posted June 16, 2025 My step dad convinced me for several years until about the age of 10 that Lilly Savage was his sister. Still brings it up 25 years later snd gets a chuckle out of it. Quote
cobra_gordo Posted June 16, 2025 Posted June 16, 2025 My grandad used to always talk fondly about his days in the navy. He joined up in 1949 as an engine stoker and would always tell us about the time they were up near Greenland or somewhere and him seeing seals for the first time or about some daft scrapes him and his pals would get in to. His favourite story though was to talk about the combat drills they used to do. Someone would call out "action stations" and they'd have to run to their positions. My grandad would always proudly remind us his action station was as an oerlican gunner, a 20mm canon that took two people to operate, a real monster of a gun. He'd recount that story and his days as a gunner for years with such pride. He told me probably a week before he died that, firstly he'd only been in the navy for 18 months and left as soon as he could and secondly, whilst it was genuinely his action station, their ship didn't actually have an oerlican gun. What they did have was a barrel. And a broom. That he would have to pretend was a gun and point about a bit. Fucks sake. Quote
The King of Old School Posted June 16, 2025 Posted June 16, 2025 (edited) I was watching some wrestling years ago (2006ish i think) with my then girlfriend who is now my wife, and RVD was on. She had never watched it before and said to me "he looks quite familiar", I quickly told her "Yeah that's Rob Van Dam, he's Jean-Claude's brother" She found out a bit later that it wasn't true, and hasn't really trusted anything I have had to say for the past 18/19 years since. Totally worth it. Edited June 16, 2025 by The King of Old School Quote
Paid Members air_raid Posted June 16, 2025 Paid Members Posted June 16, 2025 I used to tell everyone at school that my house was actually mine, that grandaunt specifically left it to me in her will rather than my parents. At least some of my friends professed to believe me. My best mate told everyone that his mum had him when she was 17 so she was only in her early 30s. Nobody believed him. Quote
davertfnewman Posted June 16, 2025 Posted June 16, 2025 10 hours ago, RedTwoster said: Funnily enough, I did go to school with someone who was related to Big Daddy, but it was the 90s and none of us had ever heard of him. When one kid who watched WWF wrestling, said there wasn’t a wrestler called Big Daddy and he was making it up, we all thought that. The kid then told the teacher, who knew his family (I lived in a small area) and she confirmed to the whole class that it was true. The boy was very smug, the other kid said ‘well I’ve never heard of him so he must be rubbish’ and the narrative transformed into the kid being related to a crap wrestler instead. Poor guy just couldn’t catch a break. I think I've mentioned this here before, but I went to the school that gets mentioned in the Wrestle This video for Catweazle where there was a teacher people said was Catweazle. I was informed enough to know it wasn't him, but didn't stop his legend growing as everyone played up science teacher Mr. Meredith with "What you gonna do? Body slam me?!" jeers. Quote
Hugh Thesz Posted June 16, 2025 Posted June 16, 2025 A kid in my Primary One class claimed his Dad had been killed in World War Two. This was in 1978 As Ive you all before about, I work in care and, at this point, with children who have Additional Support Needs. After a shift where a young female colleague had sand olda nursery lines I educated her of the origins of Baa Baa Black Sheep. I told her it was written in 1650, after a wool tax and a cold winter had led to riots . You see, there are two stanza6 which read Baa Baa black sheep have you any wool Yes, Sir, yes Sir, three bags full One for the Master, one for the Dame And one for the little boy *adding another line* Who lives doelwn that cold, lonely lane The second verse being: Baa Baa black sheep, did you hear the news The little boy from the cold, cold lane, never saw the full night through So, share that extra bag between the Master and the Dame But don't forget to place a flower On the lonely lane Boys grave. She believed it, wrote it down and sang it to the fucking kids After a parent, who was a professor, pointed out the truth, and by the way, after a good six months, she was not best pleased. Quote
davertfnewman Posted June 16, 2025 Posted June 16, 2025 Thanks for telling that in the form of a poem to really keep us hooked. Quote
