It’s only the bloody Biggest Party of the Summer! I’ll always have a softspot for Summerslam. Probably my favourite pay per view of the year, after Wrestlemania. Loads of great memories of being able to stay up and watch it live, without worrying about having to go to school on three hour’s kip.

That’s a point actually; kids these days must be living the dream with these Saturday night pay per views, getting a lie in on the Sunday, not having to suffer through Double Maths like a zombie. Trying to figure out some mad equation when my head is still spinning from Mankind getting thrown off the Hell in a Cell. I saw a report recently that they might switch back to Sunday nights now they’re under the TKO umbrella, so as to not clash with UFC. Won’t somebody think of the children?!

My wife and our Uni friends had talked about having a reunion this weekend and going out Saturday night. I secretly spent the whole time hoping it fell apart and got cancelled. Got the all clear today. Result! Thank fuck! I need this time to acknowledge my Tribal Chief!

The best worst card you’ll ever see. You’ve got to give them credit. Announce that card the night after Wrestlemania and bar CM Punk vs. Drew, it’s look like an all-time DUD. However, watching week-to-week; they’ve really put the work in. The TV has done its job. There’s loads of stuff on there that has no right being as interesting and exciting as it is.

Cody vs. Solo had all the makings of being similar to Roman vs. Jey Uso last year. A filler Summerslam main event, just stretching the storyline out until the real stars get involved. A mid-card challenger who can’t match the billing, having a nothing match, with an insanely obvious winner. But fair play. They’ve done everything they can to get The Bloodline Wolfpack over as a real threat and made sure it’s about so much more than Solo’s (non)chance of winning.

The Paul Heyman angle was fantastic, the addition of Jacob Fatu added tonnes of legitimacy, those closing angles where they stand tall like the nWo in 1997 have been super effective (helped massively by Cody’s hilarious melodramatic reactions), and this constant tease of Roman has been electric. We all know it’s coming. Still can’t fucking wait. When that music hits? Roman and Cody bumping into each other as they fight everyone off? I’ll wake the street up.

This Summerslam build is easily the best thing Liv Morgan has ever done. Before this, I’d be hard pressed to even tell you anything noteworthy from her decade-long WWE career. Of course, it’s in the worst taste possible, but I can’t pretend I’ve not been thoroughly sports entertained by this soap opera bullshit. Genuinely excited by the prospect of Dirty Dom turning on Rhea. Imagine the Latino Heat!

Priest vs. Gunther might be the most impressive of them all. When that match started looking likely, it was so cold you wouldn’t even main event the Pre-Show with it. In the space of about three weeks though, thanks to a handful of great promos from Gunther and a cracking pull apart brawl, Damien finally feels like a top guy and this feels big time. Still reckon you could bet the house on Gunther winning though. Between Rhea and Damien, I think it’s going to be a sad night in DA CLUBHOUSE. The saddest game of darts ever played. Finn might even have to turn the Xbox off.

I’m assuming Bo Dallas vs. Chad Gable gets added to the card, and even that is going far better than I ever would have expected. Between positioning the Wyatt crew as babyfaces, and keeping it mostly grounded in reality rather than spooky magic, this is by far the most I’ve ever enjoyed something from the Wyatt Cinematic Universe. That thing with Erick Rowan in particular. Phenomenal stuff. Crowd seem solidly into it, too. Big reactions. Is this…actually going to work? Or is it all going to fall apart when they actually have to wrestle some matches?

LA Knight vs. Logan should be a straight forward affair. Get a belt on the fucking man. It’s beyond all sense and logic that LA Knight remains this over. Reward him. Yueah.

Seems the perfect time to put the Intercontinental Title on Breakker. He should feud with Dragunov for a few months over it. Their chemistry is mega. Provided someone doesn’t die, of course. Plus, Sami needs freeing up. He’s got an Original Bloodline to reform! When he and Jey did the old handshake on Raw? Goosebumps!

What does it say for what a wash-out Bayley’s reign has been that I’d prefer Nia fucking Jax to beat her and become Champion. There’s far more exciting directions with Nia as Champion and Tiffany as her underling with the power to overcome. WWE always hit it out of the park with those type of angles. Much better than watching Bayley continue to be rubbish. Crap character. Crap stories. Worst music in the business. She needs a whole refresh. Get the Bayley Buddies out of the Warehouse and find the old music on Winamp, for fuck’s sake.

Craziest thing about this show is that the hottest match, with the best feud, seems to have stumbled and ran out of gas just as it reached the finish line. Overall, Punk vs. Drew remains WWE’s feud of the year, and Drew in particular deserves all the credit in the world for carrying this - both in Punk’s absence and when Punk has been present - but I dunno.

I think it was that Money in the Bank angle. Just felt like one twist too far. Just a repeat of Clash at the Castle. Punk costing him the belt yet again. Like they were writing an essay and needed to fill a word count, so just did the same thing again. Felt like loads of steam fell out of it.

Again though, proving how fucking great Drew is, one photograph with Jack Perry and we’re back on track. Really looking forward to this. Gonna make sure I enjoy it, assuming Punk will get injured again. Enjoy him whilst we can.

Fully expecting the Summerslam 1997 finish, too. There are no two men more online than Punk and Drew. They will have seen everyone suggesting it for Clash at the Castle. They will know and remember it being the greatest finish of all time. And at Summerslam? When Punk lives and breathes for a Bret Hart reference? It’s coming. It’s time. I can’t wait! With any luck, it also results in Seth turning heel and having a whole new character, similar to Shawn in late 1997 after accidentally hitting Taker. Anything’s better than his current schtick.

But yeah. Let’s go!

The timing from all involved with that '97 finish is just sublime. As big a fan as any of that finish, but it's all the stipulations involved that also made it such a great piece of work. Shawn had to make the count. Unless Seth gets another 'never gets a future World title shot' dealy or something added it might not have the same gravitas or land as well. Hopefully something clever like that does actually happen though, otherwise Seth getting added and prancing about threatens to tarnish things somewhat. Serious Seth has brought far and away all his best work this year, hopefully this and the fallout does too.

Love Breakker, but slightly gutted he's in the IC title mix at this stage. Was secretly hoping SummerSlam might bring Sami vs Jey, played a little in the vein of Bret vs Piper from WM8. With Jey taking it. The lad is over and feels like it warrants some mid-card singles gold now. Would be a nice progression of their story and journey to that point. Oh well. Felt like seeds were being planted with future stuff with Jey vs Gable and with Gable's involvement in the IC title picture I'd mentally future booked him dethroning Jey before year-end. Gable maybe drops it to Breakker in the New Year, with Breakker and Jacob Fatu slappin' meat at WM in Vegas like their Uncles and Daddy did.

Liv Morgan has been great in this recent role, feels like the part she was born to play. Which I'm not quite sure what that says. The card in general feels a little underwhelming to me, but the Judgement Day fallout makes for a fun hook. Feels like there's a few ways things could go. I'd miss Rhea and Dom together, their chemistry is great and the pairing has done so much good for them both, but interestingly the Dom/Liv chemistry has been pretty cracking too. Rhea vs Dom somewhere down the line is money though and Rhea having a proper official official babyface making moment could be a great bit of telly.

Getting the obvious stuff out of the way - Cody retains, Dom betrays Rhea - I’d go for Drew to beat Punk. It’s had a build longer and better than plenty of Mania matches, but it won’t be a one and done feud. Punk needs this dragged out so they can really push to his Rollins match on the way to Mania 41, so McIntyre has to win the first.

EDIT - Shit, forgot … of course LA Knight takes the title from Logan. I called that back in October, it’s just taken longer than expected.

Might dip back in for this. Really enjoyed WrestleMania but haven’t watched a single second of WWE since. SummerSlam was always kind of my favourite PPV though. I think partly because my first proper WWF PPV I watched was SummerSlam 89 and part because it was always in the 6 week summer holiday so it was always the one show that I could stay up and watch live because there was no school the next day.

I really liked what I saw out of Gunther, Zayn and Ripley at Mania so I’ll be looking forward to their matches. And I’ve loved every 20 second clip I’ve seen of Bron Breakker on Twitter. I take it this is Punk’s first match back then?

I don't see much WWE at all now other than the odd 2-minute clip on Facebook, but I saw a video the other day of Gunther and Damian Priests in-ring promo segment from a few weeks back and was really impressed with both of them. Gunther doing the old blue-blood 'I've been bred for this my whole life whereas you're just street trash' was simple but effective, but what really sold it for me was Priests facials really getting over how pissed off but wounded he was by what Gunther was saying. It made me think that if they chose to go that route, Priest could be a big babyface star for them going forwards.

Looking forward to everything on this show, bar Cody vs. Solo. All this new Bloodline angle has done, is shown me how awesome Jacob Fatu is. Solo's a chump pretending to be the Tribal Chief. And fair, that's partially by design, I think, but I've never bought into Solo, even going back to NXT. He's another Uso with a dye job, nothing special about him whatsoever. But Jacob Fatu? That's a star. Hell, Tama Tonga has impressed. Not sure why Tanga Loa has a job, though.

The rest of it though? Looking awesome. If it wasn't for the likely return of Roman Reigns, I'd have Rhea vs. Liv main event. Shenanigans aplenty. Punk vs. Drew should be box office too. I hope Punk stays healthy and also hope Rollins gets clobbered at some point. Undercutting this intense feud with his stupid little cackle.

Oh, and give LA Knight the US title, dammit.

Bet that press conference will go well with HHH.

"What do you think of Logan Paul's recent comments?"

"Oh you know. He's a maverick. Logan Paul's views are Logan Paul's. Logan Paul does whatever Logan Paul wants to do. Have you seen his frog splash?"
