Something similar to the red and blue AJPW ring is that one of the shoot style promotions - I think UWFi - briefly did a thing where the referee had a red wristband on one arm, and blue on the other, so if he made a gesture with the red arm it was to the wrestler fighting out of the red corner, and the blue arm was for the blue corner. It's a little thing, but I liked it - one of those ideas that comes out of thinking about how wrestling works as a sport.

I’d half checked out of WCW by 2000 and I had no idea about this until now. Judging by the hair, Johnny B Badd was about to make a comeback. They were that close to turning the company around and winning the war!

I fucking love that All Japan ring as well. Bring it back, someone.

Was it based on other combat sports having a “red” corner and a “blue” corner? Or is that just coincidental?

I'm not sure to be honest, but that makes the most sense. I think, and I may well be wrong, that the different rings in All Japan were to do with the TV company rather than the promotion, which is why you had a few different styles, but as I say that's very much a dim memory rather than a fact.

The year before they had Sable around, too. Didn't WCW claim that she turned up on her own or something to get out of trouble?
