I've been looking at getting back to Warhammer 40k....

The only edition I played was 2nd edition, Necromunda and a little Blood Bowl. But I don't think my bank balance could survive if I did.. 🤣

I feel like there's more options for the small games now which can be pretty affordable (Kill Team, Underworlds, even Necromunda is back!) but yeah if you decide you're gonna field big 40k armies it's not gotten cheaper in the intervening years!

Kill Team is probably a decent place to start, the starter set isn't massively expensive or if you've got friends that play already then they'll have the rules and it'll just cost you the price of buying a Kill Team.

I'm going full retro at the moment. My mum binned all my 2nd edition stuff when I was 14 or 15 as it was "taking up too much space". All my 40k stuff just chucked in the bin including the complete start box set, a load of metal orks and Space Marines, rhinos, bikes, boar boys, classic paints, all sorts. Miniatures from that period are really expensive to buy second hand these days so I'm occasionally treating myself to a few bits to try and rebuild the collection I once had an improve on it. I've picked up some of the monopose orks, I've got some plastic marines and I've just got some of the metal death company. I've just had to spend 15 quid on some marine arms and weapons which was the most painful purchase ever as everybody used to have boxes of them just laying about.

I've still got my Space Wolfs

Bjorn Dreadnought, Longfangs, Terminator squads,  Bloodclaws etc never selling them!

Dunno if this is the right place for this question, if it is not full apologies.

I used to collect the lord of the rings gamesworkshop, when the films first come out, I spent a few grand on my army at the time but life got in the way, am I right in thinking that the army I collected would be now null and void unless I found someone else to play against with the same figures from the same time frame for that and couldn't go forward with my old army anymore?

From my understanding it depends what ones you have (though I haven't played since the reboot). They updated and refreshed a bunch of the model range when they rebooted the game, but not all models were outdated/replaced.

This looks like it has a big list of what is no longer used https://www.warhammer-community.com/en-gb/articles/vozvvb0g/middle-earthtm-strategy-battle-game-the-upcoming-range-update-explained/

Finished the last of my 'commissions' (models my wife picked out because she gets bored of my 40k stuff and wants to see me paint something more fantasy).

I've got an Ultramarine Kill Team to paint and then my 'to do' pile is empty. I'm assuming I'll get some models for Christmas though (I'm slowly amassing a Tyranid army and trying to collect a bunch of different Kill Teams for painting variety)

Got sidetracked from my second edition project because I remembered how much I loved night goblins after my kids got me the Spearhead for Christmas. Made a start painting and then picked up a couple of bits to go alongside them because I can't help myself.

Recurring theme on this night goblin/ troll project is the glowing mushrooms I've stuck on the bases. The glow effect is fairly subtle, I could have intensified it with darker basecoats and bases but I wanted the old school goblin green so I've tried to find a happy medium. And typically it looks better in person.

Kitbashed this sloggoth using some spare bits and some air dry clay to fill out the chest. Just waiting on delivery of some night goblin archers to go on the platform.

Dankhold Troggoth. I got this guy for my birthday as I knew I could have some fun with the paintjob. Calling this guy done and I think it's probably the best thing I've ever painted. Only took 30 something years of practice.

Example of one of the goblins. This was the test model to see how the OSL worked. Dead chuffed with it.20260311-080000.jpg

Only 30 more to paint........

That Darkhold Troggoth looks amazing! Great work on the colour variation throughout

Cheers fella. I genuinely can't stop looking at it.. I'm trying to use the mushroom bases to make everything cohesive so I can push the colours I'm using on the trolls.

Those look great, cobra. There's something very Jim Henson about that Sloggoth.

I'd not clocked that before but you're right and it makes it so much better. The Kermit puppet in the background on the pictures  should give you an idea how much I love Henson. The original head on that kit is way too creepy for the silly, colourful vibe I'm going for and that one just had the most personality, especially with the mushrooms growing out of it's head.
