I’ve not seen this anywhere other than in  the guide, so is this a case of I need to let it just spin for a day before I can play anything? What your experience of “burning in”?

Just test the RPM with an app like RPM on iPhone or RPM Speed & Wow on Android, if it seems off from 33.3 then let it spin like it asks, I guess.

First off, thank you everyone for all of your help with the questions I’ve had about getting sorted with a turntable, cartridges etc. You’ve all been incredible and patient, so thank you for that, I owe you all a can of your preferred fizzy pop.

Im finally set up

 

Speakers are so close to the turntable because im in a back bedroom and space is pretty limited, but the speakers I’ve gone with (the Q Acoustic M20s I mentioned in a previous post) sound absolutely incredible. Theres a little space between the back of them and the wall and I’m using the foam bungs that you can insert in the rear (hehe), but even without them there’s not a huge difference.

Changing the cartridge was a little scary  due to me being a bit sausage fingered, but once I got that out of the way and checked the alignment with a provided protractor (the turntables’s manual had one you could cut out) I was all set. 
First up, the thing that I originally saw on eBay and thought “you know what? I’d actually quite like to have that”

The owner of my local record shop said today that the new 3LP reissue of Ill Communication by Beastie Boys has a dealer price of £73! 

Absolute madness.

My eldest has been listening to Pumpkins - Melon Collie a lot so looked up how much that is on vinyl.

It's whats killing off independent record stores. They have to buy in their stock for the dealer price, then add their mark up on it to make some money on it and hope it sells. If you buy anything from an indy shop that's on sale, more than likely they'll be losing money or - at the best - breaking even on that record. The margins have become to thin.

Where as big shops like HMV etc. get all their stock on sale or destroy. They only pay for their stock if it sells. If it doesn't, it gets put on a pallet and sent to be incinerated. Still counts as a sale though as a sale is counted as distributor>shop rather than shop>customer. Hence why '30' by Adele was the biggest selling vinyl record of 2021 even though shops couldn't give that record away.

So does anyone know where to get one of these in the UK? The Electrohome Montrose is sadly a Canadian brand and it seems to be impossible to get one over here.

Needless to say to say I preordered within seconds of getting the email as the last pressing sold out quickly and now goes for ridiculous money. Not that I’ve ordered for that reason, I’ve no intention of selling it at an inflated price, but I’d figured that that was a title that I was going to just have to accept was never going to be within my price range. 
This reissue is $80, but if you sign up to their newsletter you get a 10% off code. Worked out at just over £67 including shipping.

Found a little record shop in Harrogate on my day off work the other day and picked up Business as Usual by Men at Work in top condition for a tenner. Excellent little album. The shop was decent too, a lot of reasonably priced stuff in there that places like HMV are flogging for 2-4 times the price.

Stumbled onto a new(ish) record shop in Northallerton today, it’s been open 6 months the owner said, and it had some decent stock at a great price for the most part.

Picked up (all originals in really good condition):

Michael Jackson - Off The Wall (£15)
Men at Work - Cargo (£4)
Art Garfunkel - Fate for Breakfast (Got this purely for the Since I Don’t Have You cover, £2)
Phil Collins - Hello I Must Be Going (£4)
Paul McCartney - McCartney II (£8)
Johnny Cash at San Quentin (£4)

£37 for the lot, which for 6 albums is cheaper than you pay in HMV these days for one. Off The Wall and Cargo alone are (for me) worth the price alone.

Well I think they only have three so shouldn’t take you long. I highly recommend the first two but haven’t heard the third. Some of Colin Hay’s solo stuff is worth a go too.
