Paid Members Hannibal Scorch Posted April 1, 2022 Paid Members Share Posted April 1, 2022 Will Smith has resigned from the Academy https://news.sky.com/story/will-smith-resigns-from-academy-over-chris-rock-slap-at-oscars-12580109 What does that actually mean? What’s the impact from that?
Keith Houchen
As it says in the article you linked, he loses his vote for the Oscars. That’s the main one but there’s a prestige attached to being a member, anyone can be in the industry but only a select few in relative terms can be in the academy. I didn’t know if it may impact being in SAG or such like. The whole thing sounds like a clusterfuck. The did they/didn’t they ask him to leave the Oscars? wordsfromlee
Not being in the academy anymore also means he can’t be nominated for awards. This means that Oscar-bait movies probably won’t hire him for roles as it’ll be one less award they’d possibly be eligible for.
69MeDon
I saw a BBC commentary piece earlier today where they were talking about Smith's career being "mortally wounded". Mel Gibson was nominated for an Oscar a few years back and he was in the audience for the slap. This will blow over.

Was 11 year old Anna Paquin in the academy when she was nominated? There’s been people nominated for their first work, and what about the technical/behind the camera awards, are they all in the academy? One of the consequences of being kicked out is no longing being allowed to be nominated for awards anymore.

I wonder if resigning as opposed to being booted leaves that door open?
