SuperBacon
In an online meeting and someone trying to recollect has just said "it's just on the tip of my brain" which is funny, but also I quite like it. It makes sense.

CharlesTuckerTheThird
Probably already mentioned, but I, like many millions of others, misheard the lyrics to Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix as "Scuse me while I kiss this guy". Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted November 16, 2023 Moderators Share Posted November 16, 2023 Let's not go down this route please.. In factI'm going to go ahead and make a rule of no misheard lyrics here thanks.
SuperBacon
Is it "here, here" or "hear, hear"? I've always thought the latter, but just read of the former that it's "Here is someone who agrees" What are we saying?
deathrey
The correct term is, “hear, hear!” It is an abbreviation for 'hear, all ye good people, hear what this brilliant and eloquent speaker has to say!'

It's interesting that people* think there's another way.   *idiots.
deathrey
I had a calender that had lots of these little facts on it. Each day was a common mis-said/spelled/heard phrase and it's origins
Paid Members Carbomb Posted January 22 Paid Members Share Posted January 22 This is probably more a case of language change, simply because what people now say does make sense, but it was originally "to set foot" and not "to step foot".

As in "I wouldn't set foot in that place" right? In fact, this is the first time I've seen "step foot" I think.

Paid Members JLM Posted January 22 Paid Members Share Posted January 22 (edited) Social media is a wasteland of misunderstood idioms and abysmal written English. I thought “I could care less” was infuriating enough, but someone from my work posted “I can careless who makes more money than me, as long as I make mine I’m fine.” “I can careless”.  Ugh.  My cousin is a goldmine for these incidents also. He is a very bright, articulate and well educated man but he has the most bizarre “have you been living under a rock?” gaps in knowledge. A couple he has never lived down are: “What the hell is MINE STROWN soup?” And “I’ll have the Cajooooon chicken”. I have never pronounced “Cajun” correctly since. I love cajoon too much.  My other favourite was when I said “I won’t bring up the elephant in the room” and he almost yelled “What the FUCK are you talking about? The elephant?!??!?”  He’s the best.  Lastly I have one of my own that still haunts me. I got lucky with “Hyperbole” that I heard someone say it before I made that mistake out loud. However, I remember saying to my ultra-nerdy older friend when I was about 11 “yeah this game has persuade-o 3D graphics”. It was pseudo-3D. He called me an idiot. It still hurts.  Edited January 25 by JLM
