Merzbow
I'm torn on Alien Romulus, I enjoyed it as a very very safe reboot but then it's still a very very safe reboot that isn't going to have much of a lasting impact on me. Cailee held her own as usual, she's a star and hasn't had a remotely bad outing yet. Agreed that they nailed the aesthetics though, so many CRT's all over the place... it was pornographic. Merzbow
Getting off to oldschool TV's would possibly be the least weird thing on this site..
Mr_Danger
Tyrannosaur: Peter Mullan and Olivia Coleman do all the good acting whilst Paddy Considine gives Lyn Ramsey a run for her money in the field of misery pov dramas. Given the horrible act Peter Mullan’s characters carries out at the start and end of the film it’s a testament to all involved that they manage to give him enough of a shred of humanity to carry the film. Loads of depressing miserable British films like this on the Studio Canal sub so I might fill me boots before the free week expires.
Paid Members Hannibal Scorch Posted August 20 Paid Members Share Posted August 20 Alien Romulus - Great first half, good effects, David Jonsson was great yet again, Cailee Spaeny did a good job but didn’t blow me away. The last thirty minutes were batshit insane and I felt brought the enjoyment down and thought Spoiler Ian Holm’s effects were well wonky. And some of the callbacks were wedged in. The plot was also full of holes. Nowhere near as fun as Prey was as I terms of reboots, but certainly one of the better entries in the Alien franchise. Paid Members FLips Posted August 22 Paid Members Share Posted August 22 Reservoir Dogs Someone posted the Steve Buscemi "I don't tip" scene onto Reddit and it made me realise than I've never actually watched the film. It was good, not great. As you would hope in a movie where nearly every scene is dialogue heavy and bottled into a car or warehouse, the cast are fantastic from top to bottom. A real character peice. Steve Buscemi, Michael Madsen and Harvey Keitel especially. Outside of Tarantino and his boring Madonna speech there's nothing really bad about the film, it just never reaches the same peaks that Pulp Fiction does. For a film about a bag of diamonds nothing ever really feels high stakes. Does Mr White shoot Mr Orange? Does Mr Pink escape the gunfight when he runs out the warehouse? We even had a theory Mr Orange shoots Mr Brown when Mr White opens fire on the police but apparently he just got shot in the head and lived for a while? Decent. Paid Members Bellenda Carlisle Posted August 22 Paid Members Share Posted August 22 Trap Easily M Night's stupidest film, such ridiculous contrived nonsense. I think the twist is that it's a comedy, he can't have made this with a straight face. It's also one of his most fun films and I found it much more watchable than the ones that take themselves seriously. The audience were all enjoying it as the schlock it is, laughing regularly. Josh Hartnett's performance is pleasingly wacky as well.
Paid Members Jazzy G Posted August 23 Paid Members Share Posted August 23 Apparently Alien Romulus was originally supposed to be a straight to streaming release, but some guy at Disney thought it might have had a fighting chance in cinemas. Is it a reboot? I thought it was just one of those Rogue 1/Solo type things that fits into the timeline somewhere. It happens after Alien, but before Aliens.

I believe what is also called a soft reboot. But yeah I assume the success of Prey led them to rethink the strategy of where this was going to go. I thought Prey was a better film though then this.
Paid Members Jazzy G Posted August 23 Paid Members Share Posted August 23 Prey was great. I like some of the ideas people had after it came out for other potential Predator "prequels" set in feudal Japan and the likes
Paid Members BomberPat Posted August 23 Paid Members Share Posted August 23 It's theoretically much easier to Predator sequels/prequels than Alien ones. I remember 20+ years ago having this conversation after reading a Predator vs. Tarzan comic; there's also Predator crossovers with Batman, Superman, Judge Dredd, Transformers and, for some reason, Archie. With Predator, the nature of the character is that you can just slot a Predator into any time or place without it feeling forced or uncharacteristic, because their entire thing is travelling through space hunting stuff. It can reasonably crossover with any sci-fi franchise whose worldbuilding isn't contradicted by its presence, and it can show up at any time or place. It's amazing that Prey didn't actually trigger a run of movies, or something like a Netflix series, of Predators popping up all through history. It's harder to do prequels for Alien, because you risk contradicting timelines about when and where humans first encountered Xenomorphs, but I think there's more interesting stories to potentially tell in the world of Alien than there is in Predator (ignoring, of course, that they're technically the same "world")
Paid Members FLips Posted August 23 Paid Members Share Posted August 23 Get Shorty I enjoyed it but felt I didn't enjoy it as much as I could have. The start and end both had me hooked but the actual middle bit where John Travolta just wanders from person to person setting up all the twists at the end starting losing me. I don't know if I've ever seen Delroy Lindo or Dennis Farina in anything else but thought they were both class in this. Gene Hackman was a blast as well. Despite feeling the middle third dragged a bit there are some killer characters and real funny lines in this all the way through, I was howling at Ray Bones getting shot through the hair, "Holy shit! Somebody call 9 fucking 1 1 1!" Definitely think I'd enjoy it more on a rewatch.

It’ll be a shame if they don’t go back to Predator after Prey did such a great job at making the series fun and meaningful again.
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted August 23 Paid Members Share Posted August 23 I just want a direct sequel to Prey, mostly because Amber Midthunder is so cool in it.
