Steamworld Build is a city builder, but with some other mechanics thrown in, and there's an RPG one which seems a bit odd as well. The sequel builds on the original. Definitely worth a look. I don't think I'll bother with the RPG or the city builder. Don't think I've tried any turn-based games yet, might give it a look. Ta! Quote
Paid Members Weezenal Posted May 8, 2025 Paid Members Posted May 8, 2025 Not sure if anyone’s ever heard of it but I recently discovered Minecraft. Been playing create mode with my daughter and it’s quite addictive. I have to try to get her to play with me without my wife knowing I’m encouraging her. Took a bad film for us to take notice. The film is apparent a bit of a craze in year 2 as well. Quote
The King Of Swing Posted May 11, 2025 Posted May 11, 2025 Completed Shin Megami Tensei IV. Eventually dropped the difficulty down (final dungeon) because I just couldn't be arsed with end game grinding. Still got my arse kicked a few times, but reasonable. Took a little over 32 hours (about 30 hours was on normal) which I think is the sweet spot, for this type of RPG. Biggest flaw is the alignment system sucks, imo. Going in blind you will almost certainly end up locked into either the Law of Chaos route and locked out of neutral. Pretty sure there are neutral route guides out there, though. Found myself on the Law route. Ending sucked balls but tbh, I think Atlus have regularly struggled to actually nail their endings when a game features multiple. Final rating 8/10. Best game in the mainline series in some ways, but struggles near the end and a poorly implemented alignment system. Will go back for the other endings, eventually. Good but no Devil Survivor, which is still the GOAT MegaTen game, imo. Oh and anyone interested should absolutely play SMTIV wearing earphones. The OST is pretty awesome. Now onto SMTIV Apocalypse. Paid Members Jazzy G Posted May 11, 2025 Paid Members Posted May 11, 2025 Dice People. It's 91p on Switch at the moment, but is also on Steam where it's reviewing pretty well. Really simple gameplay loop. You roll your little dice people onto the stage, they fight the monsters that turn up while you hoover up the money and experience they drop, you level them up on the skill tree, buy more dice people, and invest in the level upgrades, then repeat. It's really simple, and stages are over in seconds. I don't think I'd have paid a tenner for it, but for under a quid it's a great little distraction. Probably better with a mouse, would even have benefitted from a touch screen. Feels like it'd be a great fit for a phone or tablet, but it'd probably end up getting monetised to all hell. Quote
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted May 16, 2025 Paid Members Posted May 16, 2025 Finished SteamWorld Dig and enjoyed it even more as I went on. Really fun game with a great ending, can't wait to play the sequel. Quote
Merzbow Posted May 16, 2025 Posted May 16, 2025 I finally played the Resident Evil 3 remake and... it's fine? Feels kinda half arsed compared to the other remakes, like they rushed it out and somehow skipped part of the original story. It plays well though, although the new dodge mechanic is dog tod. Quote

I'm sure that I read somewhere that it was originally planned to be packaged with REmake 2, but they decided to sell it separately. Could be bollocks, of course. Definitely a step down from 2. But I still had a lot of fun doing speedruns. Think my best time was about 1 hour 15 minutes. Quote
Merzbow Posted May 16, 2025 Posted May 16, 2025 It looks like they also took out Mercenaries and replaced it with an online mode which sucked, but I have the original on my PC which has that unlocked from the start. Thank god for GOG. Quote
Paid Members FLips Posted May 17, 2025 Paid Members Posted May 17, 2025 (edited) Finished DOOM: The Dark Ages and it was fine. In an effort to pad out the gameplay over 22 levels they’ve filled the game to the brim with the parry mechanics everyone hated in DOOM Eternal. If I wasn’t fresh off my run from Clair Obscure I’d have probably hated it but instead it was second nature at this point. There are cool dragon flying levels and some open world levels to mix it up further but on the whole it’s the same old DOOM. You run, you gun, rock music plays in the background. It is what it is. Personally I don’t think they’ve ever beat the original but I digress. Edited May 17, 2025 by FLips Quote

Although its gameplay is very different (it’s a tactical RPG), I’d also recommend Steamworld Heist, which is a load of fun. Quote

Yeah, I don't like RPGs but I might give it a shot when it goes to 23p in the summer sale. Quote
Merzbow Posted May 17, 2025 Posted May 17, 2025 Hot Take but the last great Doom was Doom 3, maybe it's because I first fell in love with the PS1 version of the original and that soundtrack had me feeling like the series was more horror based. I just don't like how 2016 onwards have turned the series into a twitchy platforming shooter. Quote

There‘s nothing wrong with the recent Dooms but I do prefer the simplistic and grounded originals. Quote
Merzbow Posted May 17, 2025 Posted May 17, 2025 I've been playing Dhewm3 which is a sourceport of the original Doom 3, it doesn't change anything really but just gets it playing better on modern PCs with ultra wide screen resolutions and without the BFG weird downgrades to lighting etc. Very much recommended for future playthroughs. It’s not your typical tactical RPG, there’s a bit more to it than that, and the story is very good. But given that you don’t typically like that kind of game, I’d definitely suggest waiting until it’s a lower-risk cheap buy. Quote
