Paid Members ColinBollocks Posted July 26, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted July 26, 2017 It's an interesting gamble. They're not far away from competing for the Premiership, but Poch knows, now with the stadium, if he wants new blood he needs to sell. It relies heavily on their players getting better, which is a massive gamble. PunkStep makes two excellent points, in that the gamble was tried before and Arsenal have never been the same since, while also their current squad of 23+ is a bit lightweight, so they need a bit of luck with injuries. Be interesting to see how they navigate this. As mentioned, it has very nearly sunk a formerly great manager like Wenger.

Couldn't give a fuck that were beat Bayern and lost to Chelsea. I hate the International Champions Cup and the faux-importance bollocks it brings. That said, it's good to bring the teams to parts of the world that normally won't see these teams and players live. Doesn't stop me giving zero fucks about the games, though. Paid Members SpursRiot2012 Posted July 26, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted July 26, 2017 I'm unsure about them. From my clubs perspective, I have noted a significant uptick of US based Spurs fans in recent years, at least online. So it's nice for them to be able to see the team play live. And it makes a change to preseason friendlies against Brentford. Having said that, I kinda miss preseason friendlies against Brentford and the rampant commercialism of the International Champions Cup can't be denied. Also, I don't fully understand the format. It's taking place in the US, Singapore and, I think, China. Are these just three separate competitions with the same name, run by the same group? Re: the Spurs first team and transfers. As I've said, and has been echoed by others, it's about finding the quality in depth we need, players that can help us over the line but who are also willing to not be first choice. The best example was the FA Cup semi final last season. Chelsea had Costa and Hazard on the bench and could bring them on to change the game. We don't have game changers on our bench.

As a fan of a Championship club, hosting a big team in pre season was something to look forward to as a fan, and a bit of a (in Barnsley's case, much needed) financial boost. It already feels like the big clubs are monopolising the money in football, and this is another blow to the smaller clubs down the pyramid.
Paid Members PunkStep Posted July 27, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted July 27, 2017 Conte is growing on me all of a sudden. Quote "If [Spurs] don't win the title, it's not a tragedy," said Conte. "If they don't arrive in the Champions League, it's not a tragedy. If they go out in the first round of the Champions League, it's not a tragedy. If they go out after the first game that they play in the Europa League, it's not a tragedy. "Maybe for Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and - I don't know - Liverpool, it is a tragedy. You must understand the status of the team. "Every team has to understand what their ambitions are. If their ambitions are to fight for the title or win the Champions League, you must buy expensive players. Otherwise you continue to stay in your level. It's simple." "My question is this: What are Tottenham's expectations?"
Members SuperBacon
He's a character alright. Not quite sure what his meaning behind this is? Because we haven't spent stupid money or pay silly wages, that we can't compete for the title and should be happy at our level? He's gonna look a right prick when we win the title by 10 points in May. Â
Briefcase
I think his point is that Spurs have a small club mentality. I get the new stadium but Spurs should be kicking on and adding players to the squad. Just feels like Spurs are happy to win nothing because they play the Tottenham way and thats all that matters. It's nice to get an idea about what they are about. I appreciate that the teams don't put 100% in to these games and fair enough, but it's nice to see new lads out their in the kit... even better if they doing something of note. Other than that I'm not interested.
