 "Charlotte looks too mannish."

for what? wrestling?

For outdoing Trish Stratus.

On your wank list or a wrestling show? I'm not saying Trish isn't very good or that Charlotte has/will surpassed her, but looks shouldn't be that important, wrestling is about characters. There's obviously an 'ideal' look they have for male and female talent but countless men have showed that can quickly go out of the window for the right person with hard work and real talent - it's pretty damn obvious women in the business generally speaking haven't been afforded the same luxury.

Like I say the female role model is changing and wrestling is just now puffing and wheezing trying to catch up.

Both. Complaining that looks or charisma or talking ability shouldn't matter won't change the reality that they do. That's why Daniel Bryan, despite being called "the most over wrestler since Stone Cold" by remedials, wasn't putting bums in seats or shifting t-shirts. And importantly, Charlotte is no Daniel Bryan. None of the women on the current roster are strong enough at anything for it to cover up their weaknesses -- which isn't to say they can't be successful (Paige and the Bellas already are), simply that they're unlikely to ever be more of a total package than Stratus.

Kevin Owens has a big fat tum. Some people can't get over that fact but most of us have and he's shifted probably as much merch as anyone this year and gone toe to toe with their biggest star on three PPVs in a row. Sure he might have hit a glass ceiling til his physique improves but nobody can really say he doesn't deserve the spotlight the WWE has afforded him. Nobody with a brain says charisma doesn't/shouldn't matter, the roots of my complaint are that the opportunities for that of a female wrestler with perhaps an unorthodox look are very far from fair compared to a male wrestler with a similarly unorthodox look. Add to that, if WWE don't like the way a guy looks, he can go back to one of the strong indies. Different kettle of fish for women they reject I'm sure

she was over because she was gorgeous and around in era when everyone had to be careful with there internet bandwidth.

I'm convinced (womens) wrestling and softcore porn are in a divorce procedure atm, "back then" it was necessity to get Hawt Chicks on the show for any reason at all to aid the business, cos before the net was about/huge, telly was the place to go in that regard.

This is a really weird point, and especially strange that two of you have come out with it. The WWF packing their show with crumpet because they were doing everything they could to appeal to the 18-35 male demographic makes perfect sense. I can't see what people's Internet capabilities have to do with anything. Stratus didn't debut until 2000 and if you weren't able to clog up your hard drive with proper wank fodder by then, you were doing something wrong. Nobody ever masturbated to Trish Stratus on Raw because they couldn't find hot naked girls on the Internet, surely, unless they were underage and not allowed to surf the net unattended by their parent or guardian.

It's a really nice ideal, but do you want to debate the world the way it should be, or the way it is?

Trish Stratus got arguably more over than any other regular female wrestler in company history (or at least AS over as any of her peers) because people utterly adored her, and this includes large numbers of fans that watched and enjoyed her matches that might usually consider a womans' match as fast-forward material, and yes, this means male fans that will watch her matches because they find her physically attractive, and pop for her in attendance at a live event. It helped that the matches were often OK too, making up for not-always-seamless technique with a bit of a story told or Stratus herself at least showing decent babyface fire. She was as near a complete package as you'll find, and the fact remains - whether we like it or not - that a Stratus-like level of fan reaction/"over-ness" is unlikely to be attained unless the performer is sexy enough to appeal to those fans that will ONLY react to a female wrestler IF they find her sexy.

Ha, true. I should've added "unless you were a connoisseur'. or something. My memory of the world pre-2000 is warped. Didn't realise Trish only debuted in 2000, surprised by that. When I wrote that i of course had the likes of Sable in my mind and bet during the Monday night wars it was both companies #1 priority to find the biggest titties they could to draw more viewers than the other show.

Should, definitely. It's my biggest flaw.

Can't say I disagree with a word of this, but considering Trish comes from THE era where there was the most playboy types of women skimping all over the roster - even as the attitude of the attitude era started to really die down, they still went full-out with the smut for ages - it says a lot about her that she gets picked by most fans as being by a distance the best of that period. I don't think anyone talks about Stacy Keibler or Torrie Wilson in that way, just proves that what made Trish good was really her non-looks related qualities. You can get 15 sexy beauty queens on screen at the same time if you really want, I'm gonna change the channel if not one of them has the presence required for what they're doing and I dare say I'm not the only one. Today it probably alienates just as many people as it attracts

Your point though that ultimately, people not really wanting to care about womens wrestling unless the woman is attractive will always hold it back is true. Just a sad societal fact really, and I don't expect that mindset to die, rather that there becomes enough demand for change from others that they go along with it at last.  This Ronda Rousey hype is obviously huge. Sooner or later WWE, if they don't approach Rousey herself, are gonna go looking for that mean, ultra-confident looking, no bullshit arse-kicker to give a big push to rather than the polished model who don't look like they can fight. I think we are in the baby steps of that process right now probably as I think that's what they intended when Steph came out to introduce the Divas Revolution. just a shame it's so overbooked. Think attitudes have definitely shown a sign in shifting anyway as go back a decad and gone are the days of the bra n panties match and the mud fights and the evening gown tag team match (so hilariously bad to watch Sable at Mania 20 I think going "oh, evening gowns are sooo restrictive",) in another 10, who knows what the shape of things could be?

Sorry for derailing this thread btw. I have too many thoughts on womens place in wrestling. it annoys me as much as it probably annoys you guys

I thought of this thread when watching a clip of Rollins' promo on Raw, specifically him referring to "the four-hour extravaganza Summerslam, live on the WWE Network!", instead of just calling it Summerslam. Fair enough when the commentators do it, but it drives me nuts when the wrestlers do it in a promo because it always without fail sounds incredibly false and scripted. Every other line on Raw seems like an advert for something these days and it's hard to stomach.

It totally makes sense for Rollins to do it though, being a member of The Authority.

Was there ever a source other than the strangely-worded message on the site?

Robb Douglass apologises for not updating the site anymore but he died unexpectedly on 25 April after taking antibiotics for a chest infection. Thanks to all who have supported this site.

That doesn't make it sound any less forced or scripted though.

These days you have people like Paige who sings along to her own entrance music on her way out like a berk at WrestleMania..

Is it just me or has Paige become a lot more sloppy and unsure of herself in the ring lately? I think working with the likes of the Bellas has brought her down to their level. She's calling spots louder than Cena
