Just seen it’s been 5 years since Sean Price died. That’s absolutely flown by. I think because of all the projects that have came out since his death, it’s not seemed like he’s been gone that long. Just watched this mix of his verses. 30 minutes never went so fast.

Another Murs and Slug album produced by Ant from Atmosphere, that features Aesop Rock and The Grouch? Yes please.

And it's bloody great as expected. The fourth album by the duo, and it really hit the spot in the late evening sun.

Slug is one of the most consistent rappers ever, with a great flow (gets nowhere near enough recognition for his contribution to 'independent hip hop IMO) and Murs is wicked as well.

This is the stand out track for me. Just lovely blissed out production.

So I've been listening to a bit more hip-hop and rap during lockdown, as I haven't listened to much past 80s' stuff and the odd exception here and there. Was Chest posting "A Couple Dollars" by Apollo Brown & Skyzoo that kicked it off a few months back, but I haven't been as voracious as I'd like. Found myself listening to a lot more grime and drill too, particularly Wretch32 & Avelino off the back of that Fire In The Booth, Akala, and recently Lady Leshurr.

Anyway, to help this along, I've gone and made a YT playlist of every individual track embedded or listed in this thread as a recommendation, so that's 271 videos to get through. Thanks, guys. That said, I'm aware that you lot are 'heads, so will probably have to listen to a load of "foundational" stuff that you haven't mentioned.

Ah, sorry - I figured you'd probably have them all on Spotify or Deezer or something.

EDIT: Might want to put it on Shuffle - because of people recommending specific artists at one point or another, you might get "clumps" of one artist in places.

Nice one dude. I do indeed have Spotify, but the kids take it over every day with their non hip hop nonsense.

So I'm enjoying this little journey so far. It's as good to hear the stuff I don't really like as to hear the stuff I do, because an in-depth, complete picture always makes me feel like there's a big, textured world to explore. 

Throughout all this, I keep coming back to the old Fire In The Booths which, along with "A Couple Dollars", were the catalyst to me getting started at all. This one here is one of the best things I've ever heard:

Wretch 32 & Avelino - Fire In The Booth

Overall, I much prefer Wretch32's flow, even though Akala's content is insane. That said, Avelino was intriguing enough that I checked out one of his Daily Duppy verses, and I love it:

 

Definitely will check out more Daily Duppies - tons of fun.

For me, the greatest Fire In The Booth there has ever been. Just absolutely bodies it, as the kids say. Also, uses the word 'noogy', so extra marks. 2:50 to 3:20 is ridiculous.

Cannot stand Charlie Sloth though, so I'm always a bit loathe to check them out.

Ha, yeh - I can see why Charlie Sloth annoys people, but me, I quite like him - probably because he seems like such a funny stereotype of a London wigger, but he's got a certain way to him as well. It's funny seeing Americans in their reaction videos getting annoyed at his wheel-ups.

I've been reading/hearing a lot about Ocean Wisdom and about how he's one of the best up-and-comers of recent years, so will definitely check him out (also, love his name, think it's the sort of name I might have settled on for my band if it had come to me). 

Thanks for the offer of recommendations - I will definitely be coming to you a bit later on. There's plenty to be getting on with at the moment - bear in mind I didn't include the whole albums mentioned on here (speaking of which, I should probably do a playlist of all those as well), plus you've mentioned Illmatic and a few others on here quite strongly, so definitely have to get on to that. Plus, my sister's been heavily pushing Jai & AK Paul as a sort of R&B complementary.

Check out the album Chaos 93. I still think it's his most complete one and a good jump off point for other recent UK hip hop (The High Focus lads, Dirty Dike, Jam Baxter, Four Owls).

Thanks - I've heard of Four Owls and Dirty Dike. Not heard any of that stuff yet, though. Like a lot of new interests, this is going to dovetail pretty fast, I think! Also, on the American front, been meaning to check out Aesop Rock ever since that article about which rapper has the biggest vocabulary that came out some years ago.

BTW one thing I've been reading a lot of in YouTube comments and hearing from reactors and reviewers is railing against "mumble rappers" and "trash rappers". Obviously, relative neophyte that I am, this has passed me by completely. Do you know whom to check out with regard to that? It'd be good to get an idea of what they're talking about, as I'm guessing these are a recent popular trend in rap.

Aesop Rock-Labor Days is probably in my top 3 albums of all time, and I wrote a little about him here, and No Regrets is a great place to start. 

Mumble rap? Isn't that Chief Keef, Lil Yachty, Future etc? I honestly don't know. I think it's just another lazy media label. Just like what you like innit? It's all hip hop (15 year old backpacker SuperBacon cries into his Rawkus Records hoodie)

I suppose if I was to try and select something from that side of things to recommend, it'd be YBN Cordae's album The Lost Boy (but I still wouldn't put it with those aforementioned artists?) and Pop Smoke's recent album, Shoot For The Stars, Aim For The Moon.

Saying that, if this is considered mumble rap, then start with Sheck Wes. I fucking love this song.

I figured that this would be a mystery forever, not that I really know a lot about it. Pleased that it looks like there will be justice.

Re Chaos 93 it gets another big old thumbs up from me as well. Ocean Wisdom is great.
