Loki
Man From Uncle was an audition of sorts for Bond, and I really enjoyed it. Cavill would make a pretty decent Bond. I would fucking LOVE Statham though, that would be a real 180 for the franchise. He's probably a bit old to be starting in as Bond though. Paid Members BomberPat Posted October 5, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted October 5, 2018 Cavill's a slightly dim sex pest posh boy, so he's not exactly unsuited to the part, but I really don't want to see him get Bond.
Paid Members Gus Mears Posted October 5, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted October 5, 2018 (edited) Cavill would be my choice from the realistic options (seeing as I don't think they are calling up a 51 year old Statham for the role, as excellent as he'd be). I think Idris Elba would be OK, but nowhere near as fantastic as a lot of people seem to think he would be. I'm probably bias though, as I've gone off him though since his nauseatingly smug turn in the Sky adverts last year, which is hardly relevant to a Bond discussion. Brewster McCloud
Idris Elba was good in The Wire and nothing else since. How old is Bond supposed to be in the "new" ones? Late 30s, early 40s?

Craig looked like the fifth face on Mount Rushmore during parts of Spectre and half of Skyfall was spent with everyone banging on about how washed up Bond was. Brewster McCloud
I thought that might be the case. I'm not a fanboy, so I was curious about the age factor in terms of actor choice.
Paid Members BomberPat Posted October 5, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted October 5, 2018 (edited) It's one of the reasons I can't get into the "new" Bond movies - the timeline is an absolute state. We start with Judi Dench as M, who was introduced as the new M back in the Brosnan era, only now we see her in charge as Bond gets his first assignment. So we see how Bond becomes Bond, but then only a couple of movies later everyone talks about as if he's washed up and getting old, yet in SPECTRE, we see Blofeld get his iconic scar - so it's positioning that movie (and the preceding ones) as still being prequels. It's all over the shop. Edited October 5, 2018 by BomberPat
Paid Members Gus Mears Posted October 5, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted October 5, 2018 Related to that, whoever gets the role, I hope it's less about James Bond and his wacky backstory. I've definitely had my fill of James Bond and his holiday home, James Bond and his dodgy ticker, James Bond and why his Mum didn't love him. The only thing that even starts to make sense is the idea that each Bond is a new one, and '007' is a code name: it's still a dodgy-as-shite timeline, but way more coherent than 'its the same bloke, innit'. And the former is a much easier way of shutting down all the Daily Mail-ites who might complain about race/gender/anything... What actually seems to be most true, is that every new Bond precedes a complete reboot of the franchise and their set of films exist in a vacuum. Again, nothing stopping them fucking with the casting at all, then. Edited October 25, 2018 by d-d-d-dAz

That's the logic I had always followed, but the Daniel Craig films make it pretty explicit that it's supposed to be one character, with a defined past. Guest
And yet Daniel Craig's Bond is only made a 00 agent in Casino Royale, right? Or at least it's alluded to be a recent promotion. Paid Members Jazzy G Posted October 25, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted October 25, 2018 I like the idea of each new Bond being a series reboot and it works with Dalton, Brosnan and to an extent Daniel Craig. You can pass off the little 50th anniversary waster eggs as fan service for the 50th anniversary, but then there's stuff like Lazenby saying "I see what the last guy had to put up with now" in OHMSS, and then in For Your Eyes Only Roger Moore visits Tracy's grave and gets dragged into a confrontation with Blofeld. Guest
It would also feel more like a reboot if the supporting cast didn't remain the same. I'm thinking of Judy Dench as M for both Brosnan and Craig, but there might be other examples.
