davertfnewman Posted November 22, 2025 Posted November 22, 2025 I knew a lot of people who didn't have a Cobra Commander figure, so had to use the generic Cobra soldier with the visible eyes to be him instead. A lot of toys made it into the UK via other markets, mainly making it into the Carol's Discount and Direct Discount kind of stores. There is an official list of Transformers that were released and some that weren't released but people got them other ways. Quote

By the same measure though TMNT were running from 1987/88 and by 1993 they were produced and sold in drastically lower numbers. Which is why a lot of the figures from then onwards are worth a lot more. Hot Spot, Scratch etc. They're also generally worth a lot more than the 1994/95 Hasbro WWF figures are. By 1995 WWF was probably in its lowest period of popularity in general. The early success of those Hasbro's as with the WWF in general was the insane popularity of Hulk Hogan. By 1995 he was a distant memory with regards to WWF. Look at the lineup of names in Series 1 - Hogan, Andre, Warrior, Macho, Jake, Bossman, Dibiase, etc. Compare that to Series 11 - Borga, Crush, 123 Kid, Gunns, Yoko and there's an absolute gulf in star power as well as the general popularity of WWF at the time. From 1998/99 until now I would be amazed if there's been any franchise which came anywhere near close to the volume of sales of WWF/E figures outside of Asia. Quote

I don’t think the lineups makes great deal of difference, when the product is hot kids will want anything associated with it. When you think back to your casual mates who just randomly had 1 or 2 WWF figures back in the day, they rarely had Hogan. I remember Jake being really popular with the randoms, and the Texas Tornado figure to destroy your knuckles with his lethal twister move. It doesn’t look like WWE have cracked to top 10 toys at any point since 2000, whereas you consistently have stuff like HotWheels/Lego/Star Wars/Lol.Surprise/Sylvanian Families/Furby in there? At £20-£30 a figure, Mattel have really changed the market they are aiming at from kids to adult collectors, and by doing that I guess you are much less likely to get a craze where the toys are the talk of the playground Quote

It's funny because in my experience it was totally the opposite. I was late in getting them as my Mum was totally against wrestling and when I finally was allowed to spend some birthday money in Woolworths - Undertaker and Greg The Hammer Valentine were the only two available. Everyone at my school had multiple Hogan's and a year or so later the car boot sales I used to take great joy in frequenting had at least one Hogan on every table. Ultimate Warrior and Sting Galoob's would have been the next most popular, again everyone seemed to have them around 92/93 time. Quote

Merzbow Posted June 24 Posted June 24 Anyone remember AEW were supposed to release big rubber LJN inspired figures a couple of years back? Well they're finally coming out although the owner of the company making them is currently selling the "chase" variants via a bidding site instead of the norm of randomly packing them among the boxes shipped to stores. I don't really get it all myself, but it seems to be pissing off a few people. My main thing is that they look like shit, the faces are awful. Quote
