I saw a preview showing of Broken Flowers today. I found it to be pretty poor really. It wasn't as funny as it could have been (or it thinks it is), and for the most part it is pretty boring. It has a good cast (including Bill Murray), but the film is just not good. There is also no real ending to the movie either! If you liked Lost in Translation you might find the film of some interest, but others should stay away! (*)

Overnight - documentary about a guy Troy Duffy, who's given a huge recording contract and is given the chance to direct the script to his first movie 'The Boondock Saints'...anyway, the guys tipped as the next big thing but he fucks it all up....excellent stuff, properly shows how fame can turn someone into a an ego-obsessed cunt. Check this...

 

The Boondock Saints - as part of the double pack, you get the actual movie in question which remains Duffy's only film (he's currently plannin on a sequel), excellent film, a little rough around the edges but this is a wicked film, basically about a small group of irish americans who decide to kill all the bad guys in the neighbourhood and they get classed as 'saints', violent, fast moving and pretty funny this is great stuff.

Just watched A History Of Violence last night.

 

Fucking awesome movie.

 

When the credits rolled, I literally thought I'd been sitting their 20 minutes. Never been so involved in a film. The quietest film audience I've ever been a part of, the place was rammed (damn Orange Wednesdays) but no-one would take their eyes off the screen for a second to do the usual annoying shite.

 

The atmosphere of brooding menace created was genius, really remarkable for a hollywood film. The acting was superb, especially Viggo Mortensen

who carried off effectively playing two characters in such a wonderfull, subtle way I never would of guessed he was capable of.

 

The violence was grisly without being schlocky (Horrible, crunchy realism with bits on your shirt). And the two sex scenes were incredible bits of cinema, for wildly different reasons.

 

Go see this, it's one of the best American made films I've ever seen.

Bizarre that such 'normal' middle-class Jewish New Yorkers could have such a dark past, and the conclusion doesn't force you one way or the other as to whether the allegations were true. Very intelligent stuff.

That wee cunt who was lying down telling his "evidence" with his face shadowed was obviously lying though. Great documentry.Just back from that Wallace and Gromit film. Didn't like it too much at all. /me kisses my Cineworld card due to the fact I didn't pay for it.Nothings on at the cinema thats particulary interesting at the moment. I want to catch that new Bill Murray flick however. Peace.

I found it to be one of the worst films I have seen this year. Outside of the pretty good action/violence scenes, the film was boring and there was no real flow. The acting was acceptable but really nothing special, the two sex scenes added zero to the film, and the ending was poor. If the film had been kept closer to the book it was based on then it would have been better and might have been good, but as it was it was on the whole a poor movie! Last night i watched xXx 2, it was fun, i liked Ice Cube in it, he was pretty funny, the action was good, but predictable.Fun film.Earlier i watched a nightmare on elm street, first time i've seen it, just bought the boxset and i'm going to watch them in order.I didn't find it scary, at one point i though Nancy mum was Freddy, but she wasn't.I quite liked it, not scary but it was alright.

Firstly, this isn't to be confused with any other film with the same name, or a similar name, ie: "The Aristocats". Right, with that out of the way, this is a documentary of sorts about the oldest joke in existence, the joke that starts with:

 

"A man walks into a talent office..."

 

And ends with "That's an interesting act, what do you call it??"

 

"The Aristocrats!"

 

Basically, the start and the end aren't important, but what's in between is. And what's in between is some of the most vile, filthy, offensive, taboo and downright fucked up stuff you will ever hear. A huge list of comedians ranging from Billy Connelly to Robin Williams to Andy Dick to Kevin Pollak to a whole lot more discuss the joke, it's origins, it's importance and a lot of them give their own version. Basically the whole idea is to pepper it as full of the most depraved, sick and twisted thoughts imaginable, thus making the punchline all the more silly and inappropriate.

 

Sounds boring right? A ton of comedians telling the same joke for an hour and a half? Well not only is it not boring, it really is laugh out loud hilarious. At one point I laughed so hard I cried.

 

This could be the funniest film I have ever seen. It's not for everyone, but you should see it at least once.

Ok I will rephrase that, Outside of the pretty good scenes of violence, the film was boring!!!

Just because not much was happening, doesn't mean it's boring.

I felt no tension at any point during the film.

Perhaps a violin-heavy score would help you? I admit it was all done very subtly.

I still think the sex scenes added very little to the story.

After my awesome explanation? Pah.

Just because it wasn't "Hollywood" doesn't make it good.

No, but the intensity of performance and skill of direction did.On a more serious note, I do realise that this film splits opinion. Out of the four of us who went, three of us thought it was amazing and one thought it was awful. It depends what you want out of films I imagine. This movie put me in mind of all the classic Hitchcocks and French Noir, except with bold strokes of sex and violence which move the emphasis from intellectual appreciation, to gut churning involvement.There were no explosions or vampires though, so it's not for everyone.

Man On Fire

 

My second time seeing it, despite having bought it when it came out on dvd. I had seen it in the cinema but only watched it for the second time there. Very good story with some fine acting from the entire cast. Dakota Fanning is an incredible little actress and this for me is Denzel Washington's best performance.

 

Oh yeah, and I'm not too ashamed to say I got a wee bit emotional during it too.

The HowlingAn entertaining film, which starts of as a serial killer movie (for the first 30-minutes or so), and then moves into a werewolf movie. It has an interesting story, very good special effects (impressive since the film was made in 1981), capable actors (Patrick Macnee, Dee Wallace, Robert Picardo), good acting, and a good director (Joe Dante). It is not without it problems though, as a lot of the action takes place in the last 15-minutes or so, it is pretty predictable, it is somewhat short at 84-minutes, and some things are left un-explained by the end. It is worth watching if you are a fan of werewolf films, but American Werewolf in London is a better film on the whole. (***)
